| Anyone In Marketing?
So I'm planning on finding a temporary marketing related job for the summer, what would be the best place to start looking first? I've taken a look through craigslist and monster.ca but some of jobs I've come across define "marketing" as door-to-door sales selling knives.
Where would be the best place to look first to get some relative experience?

On another note,
For people who graduated with a business degree or diploma in marketing, what was your first position and how long did that last for?

I work in marketing, but isn't really something that you'd do as a temporary job.
I'm not sure of any marketing companies that would hire for just 2 to 3 months?

I work for Mosaic and they're hiring lots of people for the summer, check out www.mosaicjobs.com also some other XM places are CIM and Inventa. Just a tip, find out who the Recruiters are, get their emails and don't leave them alone until you at least get to meet and greet with the actual coordinator of that job or they just give you the job!

Most of these examples are not Marketing, rather they are sales. Sales could be considered a minor subset of Marketing, but it really is a skill/industry in itself.
You are looking more for a sales job, I assume. Street Team/Promo Rep jobs can be very fun during the summer, go downtown and give away swag with other young people.

Well no, I'm more or less looking for an something like a paid internship. Basically my goal is to learn, make contacts, and, of course, fund my expenses. Not so much sales (as mentioned above), but more strategy development and implementation. I'm curious to know how other people were able to get their foot in the door.

Just curious, do you have any marketing education? If so you simply apply for any open positions. It's quite tough to find a job with a marketing degree in Vancouver already, so may be even tougher if you don't. There's plenty of real marketing jobs out there (i.e. not sales) on CL, etc. you just have to know what to look for.
If you don't have a degree (actually, even if you do this is a good exercise to get your foot in the door), try calling up local integrated marketing agencies (Cossette, etc.) and just see if you can take a short meeting with an account manager or something there saying you want to learn about the industry etc. Mention that you are willing to get an entry level internship; they won't likely offer you something right off the bat, but at least you made the connection and are on their radar.
I've got a friend who did this for a local real-estate appraisal firm who, with no prior experience in the job or industry, ended up offered a $100k+ salary after just a few years (unfortunately the job wasn't for her and she resigned).
See if you can add your contact on LinkedIn, or if they don't have it, just keep in touch regularly (once a month or so, but be sure to send a thank you e-mail immediately after the meeting) to catch up and see if they have anything open.
You'll likely won't get much luck with internal marketing departments of client-side companies, so stick with agencies big and small.
Best of luck, please report back any updates!

Learn SEO!!
its the biggest tangible skill for any marketeer. the co. i work for, it is expected all new hires know basic seo (ie. take the google class)
having a marketing degree from sfu/ubc/other can only get you so far. Most people dont think about SEO.
also learn about incorporating social media to the marketing campaign. regular old flyers, and newsletters are out. get to know some programs such as twitterkarma(no learning involved) and what it can do for the co.
again, i doubt these skills are being thought in school.
im not a marketing student, but i work for a co. where without the marketing dept. we would not exist.

^ Very good call on that; if you have some specialization whether it be SEO, web design, graphic design, it definitely gives you a leg up over others.
However I find this is more beneficial for for jobs at in-house marketing departments rather than agencies; which often does not give a good general representation of "marketing" as compared to agencies since most companies only deal with a tiny subset of marketing (web marketing, email marketing, social marketing, etc.) whereas integrated agencies deal with more strategy and planning behind a campaign as well as the implementation campaigns through of all sorts of various marketing methods.

I actually have a marketing education from BCIT (just working towards my degree at SFU at the moment hence temporary position). I'm aware of the basics of SEO (meta tags, meta description, linking websites) and as well know the importance of social media. Of course knowing more won't hurt either. As for web design, I have my own website that connects to other social media sites where people can get in touch with me.
All good tips, I'll definitely take them into consideration when the time approaches.

Hey are you taking the marketing communications program at bcit? I'm thinking about applying for the upcoming semester. How is it? Do you think the diploma suffice to get a job related to the field? or a degree would much better?
You said now you're working towards a degree at SFU? Is the BCIT diploma transferrable to SFU??

What's there to learn about SEO?
I have a Marketing Diploma and currently working towards a BBA in Entrepreneurial Leadership. I have job experience as an in-house Graphic Designer & Marketing Associate. I focus mainly on Branding and Packaging design but I'm well able to do web design too. Currently doing freelance graphic design right now.
Also looking for a job right now. Haven't started though as I am trying to compile my portfolio.
My problem mostly is in the field of SEO. Aside from inputting it into Google and assigning appropriate meta tags, sadly I don't know much about SEO.

granted things like this don't happen often, but anythings possible | You don't get that job with nothing more than a BCIT diploma. Try having years of experience, connections in the industry, and a lot of luck.
Nice for BCIT's PR department to advertise the fact that one of their grads ends up working for the Canucks, but take it with gigantic a grain of salt.
