Shaw Cable/Internet Problem

A friend of mine is renting a basement suite. He pays for internet through shaw up until today he really hasn't had any issues. He has a computer and his Xbox so today I brought him over a router because for months he's been switching the cable from computer to Xbox when he wants to do one or the other.

So I run the cable from the modem to the router and then the two from the router to the computer and Xbox. Unplug everything to reset it and nothing. I'm thinking WTF? Bad Cable? So I swap cables to the old one he's been using for months and nothing. Then I notice the online light on his shaw modem isn't on.

So I check the connections on the modem and decide I'm going to just run from the modem directly to computer not using the router just to test it. I cannot get the online light to come on...... He had a splitter from the wall that splits his coax cable one goes to the modem and other his TV. Now if we don't use the splitter and run directly from wall to modem the light comes on and internet works. We've tried 3 different splitters with the same result. We've tried 3 different coax cables with the same result.

The bizarre thing is it was totally working fine for months but now he cannot split the signal coming from the wall. I was wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this before and if they have how did they fix it?

R u sure u didn't accidentally push the stand by button on the modem?

If not then the signal might be too weak to be splitted and a signal booster is required.

just call up shaw and they will probably send a tech over to solve the problem
the tech will give that outlet a boost of signal

My splitter was actually broken after several years of use and needed to be replaced last week. A Shaw tech came in and also 'upgraded' the outlet with newer components.

first I'd snag a new splitter for $1 at the dollar store, next I'd step it up to one of those signal boosters, it just plugs into the wall and has a coax plug on it, and you just feed it into the splitter (had to use one at our old house or the cable went all fuzzy).

Like lilaznviper mentioned call Shaw and have them fix the problem. I'd be wary of replacing the splitter with just any splitter from the dollar store. Cable modems communicate on the 5Mhz-850Mhz and if the splitter you buy doesn't support that range, you may lose your upload ability.

Just out of curiousity - are there other splitters further up the chain (like perhaps in the box outside your house) that could possibly have failed?

So either check that it does, or just use it to see if the splitter actually is the problem.

I don't see how a broken splitter further down would affect his ability to use a splitter further up?

I always get this problem happened at around 2am to 4am 2 nights ago i think the area around boundary and grandview highway area when my friend's internet messes up, mine messes up at the same time so i'm assuming its shaw's problem not ours The internet just times out and it doesn't work anymore...somehow it fixes by itself...just takes sometime kind of pisses me off how shaw has this problem happens all the time too

We were thinking that possibly it is the splitter that crapped out and the other splitters we bought were not sufficient. I'm not sure if there are splitters further up but he does pay separate for his own internet so you would think he'd have a line coming from the box? He has an appointment booked for Tuesday so hopefully they can fix it then. If not I'll tell him to buy a booster and try that out.
