How do I get rid of this smell??

I moved into a new house. The former tenants of the house I was told was East Indian. There is this wretched odor which lingers in the house which smells like rotten spices. I used fabreeze, i opened the windows, I tried LITERRALLY EVERYTHING!! Nothing does the trick. How do I get rid of this smell?

Keep the windows open for at least a month.

Change the carpets too. The spice has already gotten into the fibre and there's no way u can remove it. The smell may also gotten into the walls so there's no way u can just "wipe it down".

Ouch...

josh t-1 03-12-2010 01:14 PM

yeah your only hope is to paint the walls and replace the carpets...

babykiller 03-12-2010 01:19 PM

Start smoking.

Try putting some tea tree oil in a spray thing of water. Apparently it gets rid of any smell. Learned that from a friend's friend a couple days ago.

RollingStone 03-12-2010 01:50 PM

Changing the carpet is a must. It won't go away.

Fafine 03-12-2010 01:51 PM

pretty sure this guy is renting so i doubt he can remove the carpet without throwing down some dough. just cumin you'll get use to it within a week- i mean it'll be gone in a week...

it's the landlords responsibility, If the smell is that bad he can request that the landlord change the carpets, if he says "no" then he can make a report to the fair housing commission and they can make the landlord do it

godwin 03-12-2010 02:08 PM

Go to your friendly neighborhood real estate office and borrow their Ozone generator, leave it on while you are out, it should be cleared in a day or so.

are you serious? what if the landlord's own house smells just like it won't he be offended?

Vansterdam 03-12-2010 02:41 PM

have you tried carpet cleaning? like hiring the pros?

invader 03-12-2010 03:10 PM

Agree on the carpets....who knows, you might find piss stains. Thats what a friend did when he bought his house.

racerman88 03-12-2010 03:14 PM

you have replace all the carpets and underlay, repaint all the walls and ceilings.
Your typical renovations when you buy a house.

mmmk 03-12-2010 03:31 PM

call around for an OZONE GENERATOR...this machine will get rid of smells in any room (even dead animal smells)

i know unique detailing and richmond autospa have it. they'll leave the machine running for a few hours. but I think they have to do 1 room at a time...not the entire house.

hotong 03-12-2010 03:32 PM

get the carpets cleaned
