| New neon sign in Chinatown; Sign may spark a revival in the bright lights Quote:
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A 45-foot neon sign has been installed at Chinatown Plaza, alongside the big parkade on Keefer Street.
It's hoped by doing so, other businesses will change their storefronts to use neon lighting, bringing a boost in tourist attention to the neighbourhood.
Neon signs used to be popular in Chinatown but have mostly disappeared.

Didn't Granville and Broadway have tons of neon signs at one point? And IIRC, they were banned eventually. Is this just going to be the same thing over again? Certain street acquires a cool, unique (cheesy) look, some hippies complain, then they all get torn down?

i'm not faulting them for it because they're trying to increase business but will all these increased lights really help Vancouver maintain the green image it sold the world at the Olympics?

^They already ruined their "image" by keeping the flame going for 17 days straight. Majority of lights around Granville and Robson were on too? What's your point, I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue.

Being "green" or "eco" or whatever the fuck you want to call it is nothing more than bullshit hypocrisy anyway. Things like burning gallons of gas during a "green" olympics is absolutely par for the course.

Until, that is, you factor in that hosting the Olympics was sold on the idea that Vancouver is a green city. the intention was to have the world know this and attract tourists for years to come, long after the Olympics left.
I do, in fact, like the idea of bring back neon lights and think this new sign looks great. I think it can add character to the city and bring in more business. i was able to name cities like tokyo, HK, and Las Vegas of the top of my head because of the great light displays they have from signs. If, during this effort, there was a successful way or even a noticable attempt to do all of this while truly being green, it would help Vancouver sell its green image even more. clearly, being green and thinking of new ways to operate responsibly is the future and is good business. so if it can be done in that way then do it, otherwise I don't think it would be as successful.

What is a big shiney sign going to do? Point down at all the rundown dirty storefronts and buildings in the area? This is like putting on a neon pink rave tanktop on a 400lb woman.

I think it would look pretty cool if there were a bunch of neon signs lighting the streets. It could also act as a deterrent to stop the bums from breaking into stores because of the amount of light it will produce assuming they will be left on all day

I came to Canada 25 years ago and grew up in the projects for 13 years, living a block away from Chinatown. I saw Chinatown flourish through the years while enduring a slow demise which turned into the dump it is today.
When Chinatown Plaza was built, it gave the community a sense of hope for it to re-establish itself and while it did for a while, especially with the original Chiantown Nightmarket, it all went downhill when Richmond became the new popular kid on the block. Personally, I believe that with the neon signs and condos being built in and around it, things will change for the better. Heck, even the new Bao Bei restaurant has a neon sign and is slowly gentrifying the area, bringing in people from outside the community. I would definitely give this neon sign phase a chance in hopes that it will revitalize the community.
