Scared of flying..anyone with the same problem?

Hi guys,

In a few weeks I am gonna fly to Asia...which is a 12 hour flight, and I am quite nervous...although I know flying is the safest way to travel, I still have problem coping with it once I am in the air, anyone has the same problem that care to share how they overcome it?

I will be flying airbus A340-300 by the way.

can you bring valium or tranquilizers onto the planes anymore?

honestly dude you're more likely to get diarrhea in asia than you are to die or get hurt in a flight there

I used to dread flying when i was a child, up till about 11 years old.

After that I just sort of grew up and it doesn't affect me at all. Honestly though i haven't flown for about 4 years so now I might be afraid or whatever.

Just take deep breaths, and always have something to do while on flight like watching the TV on the plane, or playing with your Nintendo DS or something.

Focus on all the previous flights you've been on (if any??). Those plane rides were fine right? No accidents? No crashes? All right, good, now what makes you believe your next flight will be any different? Just another flight of the thousands every day!

Try to focus on thoughts like those and hopefully soon you'll be able to overcome this phobia!

Yeah I felt the same way until I watched this movie called Alive.. it has helped me come over my fears of airplane rides.

You can bring those drugs, but you will need a prescription for them. The other option is to take something like over-the-counter Sleep-Aid, Sleep-Eze. These are short acting though, but you can take more after it wears off. If you hate the feeling of the congestion you get in the air, take some oral decongestants like Sudafed, they have a 12hour formulation.
Are you flying alone? I find it comforting and more entertaining to have a friend or someone to talk to.
I've flown back and forth between Vancouver/Asia and super long flights between Vancouver/Australia which is unbearable.
Oh yeah, and make sure you stretch you legs and tense your leg muscles every now and then, and get up to walk up and down the isles. Sorry if this might add to your anxiety, but a friend of mine, developed a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). It is a blood clot in the leg due to the long flight and inactivity, and having blood just pool in your veins and form a clot. He was in his early 20's, so it doesn't just happen to like old people.
I find the take off and landing the scariest, for me, i say a quick prayer
have a safe trip!

My first time flying I ended up having a very mild panic attack. I just closed my eyes and took several deep breaths until I calmed down. If you're sitting next to a window, don't look out until you're up pretty high, I felt more nervous when I could see houses and stuff still, as opposed to when I couldn't see anything but clouds/mountains.

My second flight wasn't as bad (YVR to San Jose International), but I found that being in a larger airplane was easier to handle than one of the smaller ones (my previous flight was Kelowna to Vancouver lol). Only thing I regret was not being at the window seat for that one, but I didn't want to have to climb over people to get to the washroom lol.

If you don't think that will work, you could always take a gravol pill an hour before the flight so you'll be sleepy through the take off.

Good luck! I'm sure everything will go smoothly

I'm in the Philippines right now, we took japan airlines and the plane ride was shakey as he'll due to turbulance. It was a 10 hour flight from
yvr to Tokyo then another 5 hours from Tokyo to here. My advice is do something to distract yourself. I'm afraid of heights but when I'm on a plane, it doesn't bother me at all. Just believe that nothing will go wrong and take it from there.

Taking things to make you sleep or drowsy is the LAST thing you want to do. Because you will NOT fall asleep. Instead, you will be anxious, nervous, irritated, and exhausted as fuck. It's not a fun feeling, especially for 12 hours.

Take proper anti-anxiety medication, don't self-prescribe something that isn't right for the issue.

Get a laptop or portable movie player and load up on DVD's. That's the best way to kill time and keep your mind off the flight.

Flying makes me sick and it's not being in the air that does it I'm not scared of flying at all. I can't stand confined spaces and when on a plane I feel constricted like I can't move. Sometimes I'll have to go to the washroom and throw up. I get similar feelings at sporting events and movie theaters if I'm not sitting on an isle seat but not quite as bad, I can't stand being trapped. If I'm at a movie sitting in the middle of a row in a full theater I won't be able to watch the movie I'll just sit there thinking fuck I'm trapped. It's kind of fucked up, I think I've always been like this but didn't realize why i was feeling like I was until the last 3 or 4 years.

I usually dope myself up which does provide a bit of relief for me.

tell yourself you are going to die on that flight, then it wont be so bad when nothing happens. if it does happen well you were already expecting it.

on a more serious note, if you grab ear plugs and close your eyes, then you shouldn't be able to "sense" anything but the moving around, and if you're okay with rollercoasters and shit, then you'll be fine with it from there

I find alot of people's fear stems from the raw loudness of the turbines/ground contact

i used to travel a lot as a kid and wasnt scared cuz i was oblivious to what could possibly happen, but after high school, when i traveled to vietnam i got scared everytime i felt turbulence cuz i watched that stupid Mayday show on the discovery channel.. its about past plane crashes and they do reenactments and such lol.. not something u wanna watch b4 a trip! but ive traveled several times since then and basically i learned to deal with it by having faith that the chances of shit happening is really quite slim. u have a better chance of getting into a car accident. just think of the turbulence you feel in the air as the same thing as when you drive on a bumpy road, it doesnt mean ur car is gonna break down
