waving guy on hastings

I found out today the waving guy at Hastings and Cassiar passed away last week after fighting off some cancer. Hard to believe he's been there over 8 years doing his thing.

His name was Jerry.

Drove by him everyday for probably 5 or 6 years. Nice guy if you ever spoke with him. Sad news.

RIP.
A lot of the most random guys you see on the street are actually really nice, sad to see that people just sterotype them right away.

This guy just literally stood at the intersection waving at people?

SilverBlitz 03-17-2010 10:34 PM

yeah he never asked for money he just waves and talks to you see how's your day going sad news... rip

Tributes are pouring in for a man known as the "'waving guy at Hastings and Cassiar".

The man, whose real name was Jerry, passed away recently after a battle with liver cancer.

He was a fixture at that location for years, wearing his reflective vest while he stood on the median and waved at motorists.

Almost two thousand people have joined a Facebook page to remember Jerry.

There are calls for a memorial to be set up, and for that stretch of road to be re-named "Jerry Blvd."

A date for a service for Jerry has not been set.
RIP Jerry, "King of Cassiar."

I used to have chats with him about the Olympics. I used to give him fruits!

GabAlmighty 03-17-2010 11:45 PM

Never saw him, but seems to me he was a good human being.

Graeme S 03-17-2010 11:48 PM

RIP, he will be missed. The attitude he had...damn. Probably got a lot more just from pure respect from othe people, 'cause he was there, doing his thing, just bein' a guy.

Sad. I wondered why he wasn't on the corner so often.

Atlantis 03-17-2010 11:48 PM

Very nice man, always saw him giving the peace sign when I would get off school from Cap College. I would always pop him a dollar or two and he would say thank you in chinese. RIP Jerry

Must've been hard for him to keep waving while battling cancer

Mancini 03-18-2010 08:15 AM

Super cool dude. Never asked for money. Never pushy. Always pleasant.

I was happy to give him some money occasionally.

Soundy 03-18-2010 08:35 AM

I dunno about a memorial group specifically, but there's "Friends of the waving guy at Hastings and Cassiar" - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2419044751
