Which $1000 Pickup Truck ?
 

I'm looking for a pickup truck that I can insure for a day for home depot runs, haul some compost, move a fridge, etc. Honestly, I'm absolutely new to pickup trucks, and I'm looking for a good reliable, easy to DIY fixes, cheap replacement parts, pickup truck around $1000-$2000. But cheaper the better.

*I'm a good diy'er that can turn a wrench. Please suggest me a cheap truck.

22RE's are almost bullet proof. parts are everywhere. just try to find a not so rusty example.

Why not a Nissan Hardbody?
Comes with a KA24. And you can easily swap an SR20 if you really wanted.

I would say S10, with a 4.3L. They are built solid and can take a beating. The 4.3L V6's are just as bullitt proof as 22RE's, and can haul a lot more weight. Also, parts are going to be even MORE plentiful and still much cheaper than Toyotas.

If you can find a relatively rust free Toyota, go that route. Only problem is that they may fetch a bit more than the rest. Otherwise, try looking for a S10.

i vote nissan or toyota for a small truck.

Don't forget about the ford ranger. Excellent reputation, variety of engines, and prices are pretty low on the older ones.

Dad had that s10 that lasted over 400,000kms, although it had 1 head gasket job done on it. Most of these kms were tough on the truck as well.

Sold the truck and it was still running.

I have owned a b2200 for a year now. Great little truck and easy to work on. I beat the shit out of it every day and she still runs great

older toyota and nissan have crazy rust problems

the chev is shit unless it has a 4.3 but then it gets the worst fuel mileage of the rest and toyota is too much money for what it is and generally are rotten.

FYI, after '94 the Ford Ranger and Mazda B series are essentially the same truck.

get the the toyota, least amount of problems with that truck no matter what its been through, if your good with taking car of a truck then you can make that motor last 400,000km easy and still run good

thing is by how the OP describes it his truck is only going to see rare duties.... Which truck fairs best when left outside for extended period of time? My vote goes to the GMC.... The Japanese trucks are work horses but they fail when you do NOT use them.

Since the price differential between older / newer cheaper truck is relatively low.. go for Ranger / B2x00 series, manual, 2 wheel drive, OBD2 compatible + immobilizer.. the hassle of not needing to go to airscare (every year), easier to figure out diagnostic system, cheaper ICBC insurance due to immobilizer overrides the low cost of older trucks in my book.

I think Kewitt just retired a bunch of their orange Rangers... so should be in fleet sales at the usual suspects.

dad had a 1992 ford ranger xlt, would use it EVERYDAY to haul shit everywhere, for construction and job site running, 36x,xxxkms on it,.. all original except for starter/battery fuking runs like a beast. i havent had exp on other trucks, but for small pick up, Ranger gets my vote. ( btw.. i dont think any of the electronics worked on that truck ahah ford + electronics = not too good.. ie no stereo, 4x4 engagement sortta worked, dash ...)

( we also had a F350 in the shop.. i LOVE'd it.. to bad reliability was sortta an issue)

i find the older toyotas and B2200's are similar to working on older honda's in terms of drivetrain

s10 or ranger for a small truck. you can get a ranger with a 4L and its got a fair amount of jam. s10s are oldschool chevy and very basic domestic to work on.

you wont find a $1000 toyota that still has more sheet metal than rust holes. and i wouldnt pick a toyota as a truck to haul shit with anyway.

hey, if you're only using it for a day, why not rent a truck?
