I think No.1 on 1st ave & renfrew (same plaza as T&T) is one fo the better old style dim sum place. Or "Dai loong wah" right beside Kootney Loop, that's another old style place.

Anyone else like Eggplant w/ Shrimp paste? MmmMm.....

TOS'd 03-22-2010 01:13 PM

^ Recently started liking it. Before I never really liked eggplant since it had no appeal at all. Doesn't really have a flavour, cooked the dim sum way, and the texture is different. But I'm open minded when it comes to food, so after trying it a few more times, I seem to be ordering it at dim sum all the time now.

We've been going to the "Loop", as we call it, for a very long time. Very good place to have dim sum. But just recently they seem to be messing up our orders, twice in a row now in two weeks. They now use the menu style where you order and they bring you a receipt like thing where they check off what the bring you. The last two times they have always put down more than we ordered. Like if we ordered one dish of _______, they would bring two or three and say we ordered it. And our last dish, we would have to wait a very long time for it, until we ask them where it is, then they say oh its on its way now. One time our last item was the chicken rice, and the chicken was raw, cause they rushed it. Lastly the bill never matches the amount we have ordered, when they mess up our orders mentioned above.

We know the owners and staff very well so it isn't "that" much of a big deal to us. And despite all of this, we still plan on going here since it's still pretty good, when the service is good.

As for Western Lake, I think that might be one of the best around the neighborhood. One of my favourite places as it's not too far from my house.

me too, fried tofu with shrimp paste is awesome too. But judging by how think the sauce is, there must be a starch overload. :D

sas 03-22-2010 02:29 PM

That zha leung dish looks pretty good. I'll give that a try next time. Is that tofu inside or bread?

LsquareD 03-22-2010 02:34 PM

^ Chinese donut inside

I believe the donut is called Yau Ja Gwai

You have to try it! One of my favourite dishes for Dim Sum

Duck Tongue!
Beef Tripes!

m3thods 03-22-2010 03:07 PM

damn that looks soooo good but too bad i don't like eggplant :p

and of most of the places i've tried zha leung kirin is the best. They put on some of that dried octopus flakes or whatever, and it's SOOOO GOOOD best 4.75 spent at dimsum.

There's also a good "tripe in superior sauce". If you're a tripe fan it's sooo good too but pretty expensive at Kirin ($7). Prince on Grandview has it for 3.50 haha but tbh Prince isn't that great for dimsum.

Prince is crap when you can go up Renfew a couple blocks for No. 1 and the new place in front of it.

old school style dim sum is actually like a buffet and you go up to the big steamer to find what you want... Even now in HK, there are only a handful really traditional dim sum places

No man, I speak English and a horrible version of French. I'm moving to Ottawa soon so I'm trying to practice more.

But I'll give a shot at ordering what you suggested. I'm pretty open minded.

dai look gau
Is it pronounced: die look gow?

And that above pic is exactly what I was looking for. Great replies from everyone and I will be able to expand my options now. It was getting boring ordering the same dumplings. It'd be cool if they had perogies as well lol
