| What to order at Dim Sum
Figured this would be the most appropriate forum that I participate for me to ask.
Anyways, there is a particular dish that I always try ordering but have no luck. The item is never really in the menu or at least, I don't see a picture of it. English is my native languange so perhaps it is indeed on the menu, but no pic. I order by pointing normally...
Here is my best description ( I couldn't google pics):
1. It is brown and crunchy and about the size of all dumpling but shaped more like a football. I think, it is taro inside. Not sure though. Something starchy and I think there is ground pork/beef
2. This one is normally wheeled in the carts at some places. It looks rice noodle and in long strips. You normally get soy sauce to dip it with. There is shrimp inside.
If someone can provide a rough way of translating into English or something along those lines that would help.
And is Kirin decent for Dim sum? That's where I normally go since it looks pretty clean and the menus have pictures.
Oh, and recommendations on stuff to order for next time as well. I normally get the white dumpling with shrimp, pork buns, and that other pork dumpling thats wrapped in yellow. And some other similiar stuff.
TIA

1. I think you're thinking of "woo gok" http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_V7WaNcOOMU...600+x+450).jpg
2. Cheuung fun.....you can get it with beef, mushroom, geoduck, too
Kirin is good for dim sum.
Better idea is to go eat with your Chinese friends rather than asking random ppl on revscene

You can always go to places that have the carts and you can just look at all the food that comes about and you don't really need to know the language ...

Just load up on Sui Mai, Ha Gau, and Ta Siu Bao. Oh, and those little sesame balls with the dark filling on the inside.

Kirin doesn't have carts and I really only like Kirin since it appears to be pretty clean. Of course, who knows whats going on in the kitchen. Oh, and I love how they give you warm towels after.
Thanks for the help guys, and thankfully, "woo gok" is pretty easy to say if brown fried taro doesn't work out. Quote:

Go to SUN SUI WAH on Main St. and FLOATA in Chinatown, last time I checked, they still have push-cart dimsum. SUN SUI WAH is decent, Floata is below average, in my opinion.

A lot of smaller chinese, less known, places still use dim sum carts. And the food at some of the places are pretty good too.

Anyone know what this is called? Its a round fried tofu that tastes sweeter and has a softer custard like texture compared to regular tofu. At dim sum, I think it's just served plain without a sauce unlike this photo. The name may be something like yook zi doufu, but I've tried saying that and staff have no idea what I mean. |

Maybe the staff are retarded.
Something else you should order is fried turnip cake and (Stir?)fried rice cakes. OM NOM NOM NOM
