is this model good enough to be used as a full time head unit in a car stereo or more just for GPS etc.?

i think this is a portable GPS, not an indash receiver.

It can replace a head unit but has no transport for CD or DVD or anything. Its a strange unit that is not very practical. Thats why its so cheap.

Well I have one, and I have driven vehicles with the indash units too. In my experience:
If you have a newer vehicle that sometimes comes with these (Camry, Ridgeline, Escalade, etc) the built in looks nicer, however if you have an older car where the deck is relatively low (Such as a 94 Subaru where you have airvents, then cupholders, then blank space then deck...) I feel the map is too low to be safe, you would be constantly taking your eyes off the road. This unit is dash mounted which allows you to see it while driving.
I have my unit hooked up to my deck, so I can listen to the radio or a CD, or select AUX input and listen to the unit which connects to iPod, USB or SD card. Also if you use it as a bluetooth hands free unit.
Some people have put these in as a head unit however no radio or CD, and the further away from the windshield the crappier the GPS reception would be.
