| T.V. NOOB
Hi everyone
I am currently looking for a 50" TV and spending around 1-1.7k on it and know NOTHING about TVs.
What brand is reliable, good quality and popular ? and where would I buy it ?

Sharps have always been one of the best, bought 2 so far and very satisfied with the pic and sound quality. Toshiba are ok for the 30"-40" but if you go 50+ the sharps were brighter and clearer (at least to me when I did a side by side)
If you can hold off a couple of months the prices of LED 50+ would prolly hit the 17s (21s atm) LEDs are really amazing when it comes to contrast and black levels + they have a much larger viewing angel.

A very quick look on the FS site and what I would buy for 50+ inch (it jumps from 46 to 52) in your budget is this http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...40917d0325en02

If you are gonna grab a Samsung esp. LEDs make sure you do some research online, tons of horror stories about reliability issues. Not sure about LCDs but they should be ok as I'm personally using their 24' LCDs for my PC.

Have bought 5 flat screens and right now have a Pioneer 50 inch 46 inch Panasonic and 32 inch Dynex. Panasonic always seems to get great reviews and Plasmas have number of benefits over LCD's.
Plassmas:
Better black levels
Better for action movies and sports no need to worry about 60hz, 120hz 240, and 480hz.
Better at showing SD content
Cheaper.
Only backlit LED LCD tv's get close to plasmas in performance.

FS has last years 55" Samsung LED TV. It is quite stunning. You will not be disappointed.

honestly i been looking at tvs for the best two years..budget was around $2g
sharp use to make good tvs, but than samsung took over
Now even samsung gets better reviews on CNET than sony.
you cannot go wrong with a samsung 6 series, 7 series, 8 series.
I got myself a 6 series 4 months ago, 120hrz, 70,000 dynmaic contrast ratio 1080p 52". For about $1600 roughly before taxes . I was going to get the 7 series but they were harsh sold out during christmas season. 7 series is roughly $200-300 dollar more. see what ur budget allows.

I usually use this site when I'm reading reviews etc...If you're going Plasma make sure the room doesn't have a lot of direct light shining towards the set, otherwise go LCD.

Another two drawbacks for plasma TVs (compared to LCD):
-generate a lot of heat
-high power consumption
Edit: But they are excellent for watching movies and sports. That would be the deciding factor for me.

For power it depends on how it is tested. An LCD will draw the same amount of power at all times.
A Plasma draws different amounts of power depending on how bright or dark the scene is. Watching a movie like Dark Night a Plasma will draw less power than a LCD. Watching something with a lot of bright scenes it will draw more power.

If you want the best picture then go with a Panasonic or Pioneer (if you can find it still) Plasma. Only issues with Plasma it requires some care to maintain it. Burn in is a huge thing, there's alot of anti burn in technology in the new plasmas but still not 100%. Other thing with plasma is they need quite a long time to break in properly and should be calibrated by a pro. Plasmas are proven to draw more power than most LCD's but nothing significant that anyone should worry about.
I personally don't like the picture of LED TV's for the price. I find it's more a gimmick because it's so thin. A high end LCD TV will look better for a fraction of the price. I'm sure in time the LED technology will get better.
