I read on 24 this morning that some VANOC execs are actually flying to Sochi in May or something because Russian olympic committee are thinking of hiring some of the VANOC people to help them since they have fresh experience.

Wait....what??

1 - 4 years is not 'more than enough time' because sochi is building 2 full olympic cities for the games. everything brand new from scratch. they arent using existing venues like vancouver did

2 - look back, both greece and sydney didnt have all the venues complete by the opening ceremonies for their games. shit takes time unless youre china

3 - the games will go ahead in russia even if half the games take place in moscow.

JSALES 03-26-2010 11:44 PM

though it won't happen, it'd be nice to have the winter olympics back in vancouver again

Greenstoner 03-27-2010 12:32 AM

i kinda doubt it tho

AVS_Racing 03-27-2010 01:07 AM

I was working at athletes village in Whistler during the paralympics and this is what I heard from one of the coordinators from Team Poland:

1) Russia will build like crazy because the current president is willing to dish out money to find the required manpower and resources.

2) The plan is to have all university students in Russia to participate in Sochi. This is why we saw many Russian volunteers/workers for the Olympics. They were sponsored by Russia to learn from Vancouver 2010 and to apply what they have learned here to Sochi.

3) Anyone eligible for military service will be involved in Sochi one way or another.

No matter how much we want the Winter Olympics to be back in Vancouver, it just will not happen. Just imagine the embarrassment if Russia cannot complete or provide enough infrastructures/venues for the Winter games. Hell will rise in Russia if that was ever to happen.

In other news, I was talking to some coaches and they said that Vancouver could become one of the host for the Summer Olympics! Just add in some tracks and a world class swimming pool then you have yourself a candidate! *wishful thinking*

highly unlikely...for starters we just held the games so its not coming back here anytime soon regardless if they're the summer games. Secondly, we all saw the amount of people bitchin and moaning about the cost of these games..summer olympics cost wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more than winter olympics.

AE98 03-27-2010 01:55 AM

summer olympics cannot happen in vancouver as the required infrastructure dont exist...if it really revert back it will go back to Beijing not vancouver.

Ronin 03-27-2010 03:02 AM

Wishful thinking. Regardless of how far behind they are, they have almost four years and the Russians will throw all sorts of money and manpower at the problems. They have significantly more cash than we do...plus they don't need public approval to spend it.

And they'll break out all kinds of slaves to toil and labor until that shit is finished...or they get sent to a Siberian gulag.

godwin 03-27-2010 03:05 AM

Sochi is project managed by SNC Lavlin. I highly doubt they will fail.

I think a lot of RV users / Vancouverites don't understand the deep economy relations out East especially in Ontario has out with Russia. Just because Vancouver to have a huge Asian population, doesn't mean the whole Canada is too.

!Tigger 03-27-2010 09:46 AM

Mannnnn i wonder if Korea's going to win the olympics LOL they got outbid so many times

RRxtar 03-27-2010 09:56 AM

both seoul and barcelona keep applying for like every fucking olympic games. they both have had the olympics within the last 25 years. they need to relax abit.

Winter Olympics back in Vancouver - not happening any time soon at all. There are plenty more cities out there that will get it before we do again

Winter Olympics not happening in Russia - Not a chance

drunkrussian 03-28-2010 11:48 AM

AutozamAZ-3 03-28-2010 12:21 PM

someone posted on wikipedia that there might be a vancouver and seattle are thinking about being in the running for the 2022 summer olympics. not sure if its true or not but pretty cool to be the first joint venture in olympic history

jeff_alexander 03-28-2010 12:24 PM

Even if it costs them 20+ million lives, they will prevail

What about the US. Last to enter WWI, WWII and what about Katrina.

Mobilizing and choosing to mobilize are two different things.

theres several reasons that they wanted to stay out of wwII. They were not ready for a war, and especially a war on 2 fronts. A majority of americans wanted to stay neutral and if it wasn't for the work of Winant and a cbs corrosponded (who's name slips me now) and the attack on pearl harbor and the treaty that germany and japan wrote, they probably wouldnt have entered the war.

azncreationz 03-28-2010 07:57 PM

I personally wouldn't want the games back in Vancouver. How soon you all have forgotten the costs! Do you want to hear the sound of another 6 billion dollars for security...which will 'definately' be more by the time 2014 rolls around. We haven't even figured out the final tally what these past games will cost us!
