question about HP total care warranty

my HP netbook is broken

i called the 1-800 number for warranty repair, and they told me to wait for UPS to send me a shipping box to overnight it to their repair facility... in ontario, and billed me a "one time fee" of $22.50

there are lots of HP repair centres in the GVRD. why is it i cannot just go to one of the local ones? if i ship it to ontario, i will lose the computer for at least a week (incl. shipping times). i had difficulty understanding what the tech support person was saying (india), but from what i could understand if i do go local, HP will not pay out the warranty claim... why?

Just take it to the store you bought it from. Most stores that sell HP are either HP authorized repair centers or, at least, HP authorized facilitators (they'll ship it to HP and HP foots the bill).

If they don't have the parts, will they just give you a new machine? HP support and product quality has really gone downhill in the last decade. :P

i spent the last 2 months developing a deep hatred for the HP "customer support" branch in india that they keep forwarding me to for warranty repair calls like mine, and i got nowhere. finally someone else gave me the number at HP for a case manager in canada and i got the call within a week that they cannot "repair the unit within a reasonable timeframe".

they said they will replace it with a new one, but i have a problem with all the data that is trapped in my old HD that i wasn't able to retrieve before shipping it out (the keyboard and touchpad do not work).

i asked if they could swap the HD to the new one and they said no. i asked them if they could send both the old and new one together so i can do it myself, and again they said no. so now i have to get the old one back first, find someone to help me physically pull the HD out and copy my stuff off the old HD, wipe it, then ship it back to ontario, and then have them ship the new one back to me so that i can copy over the new HD.... in theory. assuming this will take another 2 months
