I went with CBA Electrical & Security Systems Ltd. as I only needed a basic alarm and motion sensor for my pre-wired apartment. Mainly for insurance purposes. Omni Security wanted $750 for the same job, I think I paid roughly half that or so. I had no complaints. Recommended to my buddy a few days later and he had no complaints either.

I just Googled it and CBA came up as one of the top seven biggest alarm companies in Vancouver for the past five years, so i went with them.

Avoid ADT, the dumbest customer service in the history of customer service. They make outsourced electronic warranty service and even Telus service look good.

I would just get a dog. But if your still on the line for a security system:

Most people get security system for insurance reason (for a lower deductible if someone did break-in)

DSC, PC, or ademco panels are easy to use. Don't get GE SIMON or ALLEGRO crap.

If you are getting a security system for security reasons, get a dedicated backup line too. (GSM, IP, etc)

Know the policies for your response center. For example, if your cooking and the fire alarm goes off, some people think canceling on the keypad is all you need to do but nope; The firetrucks come, look around and then slap you with a fine (at least in Ontario, don't know around here)

You might want to put special instructions on your file (eg.only dispatch if 2 different zones goes off) as police/guard response cost extra $$. Some police don't attend '1 hit' alarms.

Look at the maintenance warranty program and make sure some stuff are covered (installation, parts, batteries) and also if they have a 24/7 tech support center. Before all that, know how to use your alarm system!! (stay, away, panic, bypass..)

Ya, I thought about it when I bought my house a few years ago. I never thought about a lower deductible but I did check how much it was save me from year to year and was minimal, like $40 or $50 a year.

I pay home insurance and that's gives me plenty of piece of mind. It also doesn't hurt that 3 cops rent the house next to me and another family of cops (husband and wife) live across the street. Because of the location of place on the street the odds of getting broken into even in broad daylight are very very slim and if it does happen I'm insured.

The site canadasecuritycompanies lists the security companies / location, which is quite useful.

They have great deals with security companies :
I ask for a security quote on their website, and i get a discount from one of their listed companies in Vancouver!

I think you should go for a alarm monitoring, it is more secure.

Are you wanting to get an alarm just for insurance reasons or for security? Is your home already pre-wired or does it need to be wired? There's a big price difference if the wires aren't in.

Were they offering the same equipment though? Did they pull the necessary permits?

ADT is notorious for being a 1-1-1 company. They give you 1 keypad, 1 contact, 1 motion, often at or below cost and call it a day. ADT makes their money is in monitoring revenue so as long as they have you tied up to a contract they could care less about you.

I wouldn't trust monitoring that wasn't local. Some local companies were offering $9.95/month monitoring a few years back... turns out the calls were being dispatched to a company who hires inmates in a Southern USA prison. True story. Another company had the alarm systems dispatch to his pager and he would call the property references and police himself...
