This has happened MANY times.
I can think of 2 examples off the top of my head.
a) Mercedes-Benz CD changers. Same design, same model number. Manufacturing was split between Europe (mostly Hungary if I remember correctly), and China. Guess which ones died repeatedly. Talked to my friend who works for MB in Shenzhen, and he said at the moment that so far the only parts actually being manufactured in China for the Chinese market are trim pieces and the "lower level" electronics. Everything else is still being imported.
b) FAO Schartz, makers of those premium Teddy Bears. Can't find the article right now (it was on either CNN or Time) but basically the Chinese couldn't make 'em right. The problem is that if the eyes of the bears are even off by 1mm, the face either looks lopsided or "not cute" anymore. Customers were noticing and they were losing sales. Not sure if they ended up pulling out at the end though. |
