the 70% chinese content worries me, especially after all the posts here on RS of chinese built cars

kind of surprising it only takes 112 passengers? A lot of planes can handle more then that.

lol so much hate on chinese quality. to be fair i think most of the shitty quality chinese products are made because shady companies try to cut cost, and eventually get busted and bankrupt.

This train is funded by the government isn't it? I think the quality comparison would be completely different then.

Chinese-made products are fine as long there's quality-control. IE. Take a look at the iPhone.

Its a fairly common comparison. Environmental impact, convenience, price to ride, cost to construct, comfort, speed, number of passengers.

I'm willing to bet, initially this train will cost more to ride initially then a plane would cost.

Airlines are definitely competing with trains these days:

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/bizchin...nt_9462903.htm

Don't get me wrong, i think trains are awesome and i wish we had more here. I'm just surprised the capacity on this one is so low. If its 112 passengers per car and is expandable, it's awesome. But the OP implied that the capacity for the whole train is 112.

The shinkansen does way more:

Companies go to China for the cheap manufacturing but ultimately the quality is up to the Chinese manufacturer. It shouldn't be up to large conglomerates to micromanage the quality of a company they've contracted to.

The failure isn't with "shady companies", its with Chinese manufacturers who want to maximize profits by shaving operating costs.

^ I can't think of a single western company that has outsourced their production to China ending up getting slammed for the quality. Companies over here take a lot of precautions and abide a lot of standards and codes, and they would of course have quality assurance at the end of the assembly line.

What I meant by "shady companies" refer the mainlander companies. They have less training with engineering ethics or engineering codes/standards to follow. Some of them have no moral either, that's why you see the toy export recalls or some guys reusing trash oil for cooking oil in restaurants.

But this 500km/h train has got to be funded by the government... and i'd believe they would have tighter quality checks than the average companies. Because if someone dies because of cutting corners for this construction, pretty sure someone would end up getting the death penalty (less incentive to cut corners)...

wrong. government funded projects dont cut corners to cut cost, but cut corners so the higher ups can pocket the money.
