Ergonomic task chairs

I couldn't find a section relating to "office furniture" so I thought I'd ask in OT...

I'm looking for a new chair for my home office now that I've managed to break my el cheapo $50 Office Depot budget chair and I know most of you guys here work desk jobs so you're sitting for hours on end in front of a computer.

What chairs do you use and what do you think of it? My cheapo OD chair was pretty crappy (the foam on the seat compacted after about 6 months of use) so I'm looking for something that's way better than that.

I've heard from people that the Herman Miller Aerons are good (although they're pricey). I've been checking out the Steelcase Leap as well as they come highly recommended as an alternative to the Aeron. What do you guys use that you like (or don't like so I know to avoid them) and if you know where they were purchased, it would be even better as I'd like to go out to the store and try the chair as well.

This is what I bought after sitting Aeron and Freedom for 5 years. Best one yet. Haven't tried the Embody, but Contessa is good for me now.

Thanks for the link! Looks like a pretty nice chair. Plenty of adjustments too! If you don't mind me asking, what was the price (ballpark is fine) of the chair?

I've had experience with the Aeron chair for a year at one of the design studios I've worked at. I would sit on it for 8-9 hrs plus and I have never felt exhausted/tired at the end of the day. For an $800-900 price tag, it's a worthy investment if your job requires long hours on the desk. I've seen some on craigslist too as low as $600 (they were liquidated by offices going out of business).

Yeah, I saw someone selling some for $400 on CL. Used of course. Not sure what sizes they had. Most of the people I've talked to that have used the Aerons say they are pretty comfy. I think however anything is better than what I'm using now. I find I have to get up every hour after sitting in this chair because the foam padding is basically compressed so thin all I feel is the wood base.

I'm also going to check out a used Steelcase Leap I saw used on CL for $170 which is a lot less than the retail $850 price tag. I've also seen a few on eBay (armless model) that go for $220 with free shipping to a US address. The reviews on the Steelcase Leap also are pretty good although I've never talked to anyone who has sat on one for an extended period of time. I'll have to see if there's a Steelcase retailer around here where I can test one out.

CDN retail is around 1700 but if you shop around, you can get it for 1300 or less. (eBay sometimes have them for around 500, but it's a rare item) You can add either headrest or jacket hanger onto the chair for another 150.

The build quality is excellent. Mine was Made in Japan and you really have to appreciate Italian design(Giugiaro Design)+Japanese workmanship(Okamura)

Aeron is pretty good, but the adjustment is too limited. Freedom is a bit rough in term of the quality IMO, can't comment on Leap.

A good chair can last you 5~10 years easy. If you work in front of desk long enough, even high-end chairs like Embody is considered a bargain.
