macbook pro 13' yes? no?

so i'm thinking of getting a new laptop, and i already thought about getting a macbook pro, but i'm getting a lot of mixed reviews from other ppl, websites and i'm a little bit overwhelmed...

so RS tell me what you think :)

pros?
cons?
it is really worth the price tag?
is 2gb of ram a little bit hefty for the price i'm paying?

TOPEC 04-09-2010 06:53 PM

do u actually use the features that a mac offers? if not, then ur solely jumping onto the mackbook band wagon which i believe 90% of the users out there that has a macbook r.
it really depends on what ur using it for, if ur using it for basic stuff, i would save the money and get a decent windows laptop.

photo editing, music editing, gaming, music, movies... you name it
and i want a computer that actually last me for a long period of time unlike laptops i had in the past, which lasted me a year and half or less (craigslist)

edit: wow i realized that now i'm actually getting a first brand new laptop xD

If you're such a computer expert, why are you asking RS for advice? Go with a Macbook then.

but for photo editing yes that 4gb is required, for running osx, 2gb is totally fine
i am no computer expert... yes, that's why i'm asking for your opinion

pros?
cons?
how long does apple computers usually last?

Tim Budong 04-09-2010 09:31 PM

what type of gaming are u looking to do

anything hardcore will not run, although COD2 and SC2 run fine on the current one if booted by bootcamp

Photo and Music
if photo, the photoshop will need the 4gb of ram to process things, and with shit like content aware for CS5, 4gb is needed to run smooth

Music
if recording, than the SOFTWARE support for such task is better on a mac due to certain programs being written for mac, ie: protools8

regardless, music recording would require additional hardware anyways

if your just trimming and mashing shit together like mp3s, a windows laptop does just fine

Im on a 4yr old mac, no complaints, and I can play l4d, SC2, run the photoshop, and record stuff, as i do hook up a mini board and preamp to the mac

if you were to buy a mac, wait for the icore ones, which according to mananetwork, who sent me a link to www.macrumors.com saying the new ones could be out as soon as tuesday

i'll probably install cod4 , mw2 or gta4
how do you think it'll run?
and as for photoshop i'm getting that extra ram
does your mac match the spec of the current mac now?

asian_XL 04-09-2010 10:22 PM

I have been using my co-worker's macbook to do photoeditting, video editting, music editting, graphic design in the past 4 months at work.

to be honest....FUCKING GET A PC LAPTOP FOR GOD SAKE, I love the design, but no reason for me spending 2x as much for a mac.

btw...2gb is good enough, unless you are a heavy multitasking user. I can wait that 1
sec difference when loading a program.

Would I be considered a fan boy if I bought a macbook pro mainly because of the abuild quality of the aluminum unibody? With my experience of several HP laptops, I absolutely hate the plastic pieces on it, body. Maybe it's just how it gets treated but I always have it in and out of bags and in a rush to go places etc. Or is it even a valid reason to buy one?

Kim Jong Un 04-09-2010 11:17 PM

yea another good point there i love the design and the aluminum unibody housing

Manic! 04-09-2010 11:26 PM

If you want a 13 inch laptop get the new Asus U30Jc-A1‎. Can be had for under $1000, has up 10 hour battery life, you can game on it, and yes it has Turbo.

The ASUS U30Jc is the first to combine a Core i3 processor with NVIDIA’s Optimus graphics switching and theoretically provides both performance and battery life at once. The ASUS U30Jc is powered by 2.26GHz Intel Core i3 processor, an nVidia GeForce 310M chipset, Altec Lansing speakers, a 4GB RAM, a 320GB hard drive.

i dont get how u guys can break laptops, or i just have really really good luck with them. i've used samsung, toshiba, hp and did own a macbook before, and guess what, the mac was the one that had a broken case cover, and the mac was the one that i used the LEAST.

Kim Jong Un 04-09-2010 11:40 PM

i've had bad experiences with laptop : ( i'm such a klutz

DuhDang 04-10-2010 12:04 AM

if u want a long lasting laptop get a vaio or a windows computer. All my friends mac once they drop it once its dead. And if there is a problem with the mac u have to go to the apple store and get owned up the ass.
Windows on the other hand you can google and DIY

Hehe 04-10-2010 12:13 AM

I'd say wait until 13th... supposedly apple is announcing MBP refreshes... then grab a current gen for cheap on CL. :D

Kim Jong Un 04-10-2010 12:16 AM

man i'm so damn confused
so what's so special about this new line of macbook pro?

goo3 04-10-2010 12:35 AM

They're both comparable, just different. I think they did a really nice job on the MacBook Pro. They have some nice features you wish PCs thought of first and OSX is surprisingly light and stable.. well, maybe not a surprise if you know it's built on top of UNIX. I go for months on end without shutting it down with usually 4 spaces full of apps running

Go to the Mac store and try it out for awhile. If you like it that much better, then buy it, preferably with a student discount. I think it comes down to what you like using better day to day.
