Ok

So i have a blu-ray recorder (a matshita uj-240as) i bought some blank blu-ray discs from ebay, from japan

I bought 20 of them

the first disc out of the 20, was read and burnt fine @4x

all subsequent discs (19 of em) can't be read by my drive... it just tries a few times and stops.. i cant even attempt to burn anything on them

other blank discs work fine, other blank bd-r's work fine (hell the first one of the batch of 20 worked as well)

so im wondering did i get scammed ?? -_-

is there anything i can try with my drive? or am i stuck bitching for a refund/exchange? (i've recently upgraded my firmware so i can't apply any new updates)

Get an application like DVD Identifier and get the media code from the disc itself.

Once you have the media code, Google it, or go to Videohelp.com and see what other people's experiences are with the same media. It'll give you a general idea on the quality of the media (and you'll be able to find some recommendations on media that people have been having good experiences with too)

no-name ebay discs are always bad and problematic.

Yeah, I'd say if you buy off eBay, at least get some reputable branded discs. Verbatim discs are generally good but are usually a little bit pricier. Ritek seem to be hit or miss.

Unfortunately, buying writable media is a bit of a crapshoot. Most of the time, even retail branded media aren't always great (like Memorex DVD's) and almost all of them are just rebranded discs from one of the big manufacturers and you don't know what the media code is until you open the packaging and check it. I usually buy from online retailers that actually provide media codes in their product descriptions. This way, I know what I'm getting when I buy my media. (personally with recordable DVD's, I stick with Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Don't have a BD-R so I don't know what's good.)

yeah the discs themselves can be the issues, my laptop drive burns almost everything just fine, but the fairly cheap Memorex DL discs from SS I can't burn, the better drive in my roommates desktop can though.

So it's probably just a combination of lower end burner + low end media = errors. get better media and you should be fine.

I find that PC drives are much more tolerant to crappy discs and bad burns. My set top DVD player on the other hand will outright reject any crappy disc with even the slightest of errors. My Wii also seems to not like certain recordable DVD's...I seem to get a 50% success rate with the cheaper media.

These are actually Mitsubishi (Verbatim) discs

and they weren't cheap about 2x more than if you were to buy them inside Japan (they've got printable surfaces but not sold here and @4x)

But this is the weirdest thing i was getting help on ImgBurns forums and the guy suggested to keep trying the disc to see if it gets read... so i ejected/inserted for about 20+ times and the disc was read... got the disc information for him but that didnt help

but i noticed i was using an older imgburn so i decided to get the latest imgburn + install the latest win7 updates... and BOOM all the discs were read immediately with no problem just like before.....

wtf?
