before the world of CHAP. The first cadets to receive CHAP training were during the summer of '99 - at all the CSTC's. So many issues that summer, things being blown out of proportion, cadets and staff cadets being sent home for little issues. Of course, these things are ironed out now.
That being said, I remember how physical discipline was given out in a way which promoted teamwork, and motivation. I was a young cadet at 12, and had just received my uniform. My Sec Comd had taught me how to iron my tunic/trousers and polish my boots, but of course, there were always those weeks where "I forgot". My CSM was doing the inspection and came up to me. She saw that my uniform was not up to standard, and instead of yelling at me, which was exactly what I expected, she just asks who was my Section Commander. Sgt Alveraz - I still remember. She points to him and says, Sgt, one lap of the Parade Square please. And while you were all parading on tiny parade squares, of course, the Seaforth Armoury is a decent sized place. If you had a few cadets in your section that didn't do their uniform properly, you'll be tired after the opening inspection.
When you see someone else take punishment for your wrongdoing, you feel much more ashamed. I wasn't just a failure in my own sense, I had let down my Section Commander. In the field, when we were on a ruck march, if I couldn't carry my weight, my Section Commander was the one who would lighten my pack by grabbing my extremely heavy sleeping bag, or even grabbing my entire pack and carry it himself. These are things you never forget as a kid.
The only issue is that if you don't have the good Senior NCO's that I had, I would have been the 12 yr old kid doing pushups on the Parade Square. Just glad I had the good ones leading me.
I am just a civilianvolunteer myself. As 609 was a peeloff from 655 (the squadron I was in as a cadet), the CO and some of their senior staff knew me pretty well already. I pretty much walked in one night and just expressed my interest in helping them out as an assistant training officer Posted via RS Mobile

so all those civilian adults that were around were volunteers??
there's civilian volunteers and civilian instructors
volunteers are the ones that just drop in and don't really even need to fill out paperwork. instructors actually have to go through a lengthy "recruitment" process where they have requirements, paperwork, etc etc
