Currency Exchange in Vancouver

I searched but didn't come up with the answer I was looking for.

I'm looking to purchase a vehicle out of the United States. I will not put up with my bank exchanging my Canadian dollars at 97c/US. Are there any companies, banks, etc out there that will give me an honest and up to date exchange on a sum of cash ($6000-$7000)? The dollar is at par and would like to get it exchanged at par but it seems like too much to ask. If anyone could offer up suggestions it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for that useless post tiger! I'm looking for some personal experiences with specific institutions trying to save myself from a wild goose chase if possible.

you could've listed some places to show that u've researched.

BUT, i personally use vancouver bullion. their rates are very competitive , and they have a "prefered card " where u can get .015 more. which makes a diff if your dealing in large sums. The chinatown location has good staff.

we also use VBCE at the place i work at.

i've used customhouse as well - they are not that competitive compared to vbce.

when the news is posting that the cdn dollar is at par to the usd it means that the posted rate that the Bank of Canada is trading at is at par not for all trades.
foreign exchange is tiered like many other goods, the more you buy the better the deal.
go to you bank and ask what rate you would get for $1000 vs say $10000+, the later will have a slightly better rate, in addition getting it in a draft or deposit to an account will get you a better rate as non paper money transactions are cheaper for banks
unfortunately for everyday transactions you will incur a fee for exchanging your money but being smart about can save you some money.

but if you want a simple answer - vbce usually has a better rate than banks

My routine is:
- Call VBCE and get rate
- Goto TD, ask them to either match it, or give me a money order made out to VBCE.

At least the 3 Road branch, you'd be surprised at how willing they are to match it, knowing that their competition is a few doors down.

What's the best way to get USD from VCBE? Walk in with cash? Can they debit out of an account?

+1 on vancouver bullion, they have a lot of currencies that some banks don't bother carrying and their rates are more than fair, i asked my bank for some Hong Kong dollar last time and they only had HKD$300 on hand, thats like only about CDN$40, LOL...

if u have a friend that works at a bank, ask them do get the exchange done for u as they get a better rate, i was able to get $0.02 better on the USD exchange last week by doing this, u get a better deal if u get a USD chq vs USD cash as well (difference is only about $0.005, but if the amount is large enough, there will be a difference) same rule applies to other currencies

hope this helps
