Major Oil Spill

Oil spill off U.S. coast set to become worst in history as 210,000 gallons gush out a day and Obama demands BP pay for it

A giant oil spill off the coast of the U.S. could become the worst in history, it was feared last night.

President Obama has offered military planes, ships and equipment to help BP stem the oil spewing from a well beneath the rig which exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico last week.

But experts said the unprecedented containment operation was unlikely to prevent strong winds pushing the slick, which has a circumference of 600 miles, to the shoreline by tonight.

This would put swathes of marine wildlife in danger.

Five times more oil than BP estimated is gushing into the ocean each day – about 5,000 barrels, or 210,000 gallons.
Just a short bit of the whole article. Basically a big oil tanker leased by BP blew up and is leaking oil. At first they estimated it was only 1,000 barrels a day but is now estimated to be at 5,000 barrels a day. Currently they are unable to close the leaking pipe and is doing controlled burns to prevent it from reaching shorelines.

geez, and they say offshore drilling is safe nowadays!

Liquid_o2 04-29-2010 02:37 PM

This is why it is so dangerous to start oil and gas exploration off the coast of British Columbia. We are supposed to have some very rich deposits of oil and gas, but are the environmental risks worth it?

hotjoint 04-29-2010 02:42 PM

gas prices are gonna skyrocket by tomorrow

Mugen EvOlutioN 04-29-2010 02:45 PM

That's not the concern bro. It's economic feasibility.

orange7 04-29-2010 04:20 PM

shit.. need to fill up tonight..

sunny_j 04-29-2010 05:36 PM

Alby 04-29-2010 05:38 PM

as mentioned, they are going to take the oil out further into the waters to do control burns so the polluted black air will dissipate by the time it reaches the land.

orange7 04-29-2010 09:45 PM

any idea how this oil spill would affect the quality of the seafood in Vancouver?

I think the price is gonna go up QQ

raygunpk 04-29-2010 09:55 PM

yay i filled up yesterday... on mcnuggets.

what's this thread about?

Mugen EvOlutioN 04-29-2010 10:11 PM

its about sweet and sour dipping sauce

LiquidTurbo 04-29-2010 10:17 PM

What's interesting is this could have massive effects on the ecology of the basin, a lot of seafood comes from that area. I would hate to be BP right now.. epic nightmare on so many levels.

Alby 04-29-2010 10:20 PM

from the article i think they are paying about £4 million a day to contain the spill

no_clue 04-29-2010 10:24 PM

for those who worry about rising oil prices, this is barely a dent and nothing compared to hurricane katrina. BP contracted the company "transworld?" to pump the oil, it is not their oil rig which therefore reduces liabilities but who knows?

Boston Pizza is also an oil company huh

sunny_j 05-02-2010 08:38 PM

bp=british petroleum

Anjew 05-03-2010 02:05 PM

sigh those nasa pictures we're on the 29th...... +5000 barrels a day.....

frankly i'm scared since they have no idea on how to cap that.... concrete dome whatever

this isnt similar to the previous oil spills as those had a finite amount of oil where as this one is from a much greater reservoir.
