So I get off work Friday night and am sitting at home, waiting for my friend to shoot me a message saying she's ready for me to pick her up for dinner, when she gives me a call. Somehow in between half-crying and half-raging, she manages to convey a message that all four of her tires were slashed somewhere between 4 and 5 in the late afternoon and that there are a bunch of cop cars swarming her street, with four kids in handcuffs. Turns out that one of her neighbour's sisters happened to be visiting and is a police dispatcher, hence the quick and relatively strong police presence. Anyway, by the time I show up at her place, the cops and kids are all gone. Only two kids were taken away by the police, and the other two were let go.
We start talking with the neighbours and apparently some young kids between the ages of 10 and 12 were playing ball hockey in the elementary school next door and saw these punks slash my friends tires, so they stormed over and started threatening the kids and even broke some of the hockey sticks to get their point across. Seriously, who threatens young kids? Mind you, who the hell slashes four tires in broad daylight on a relatively busy street?
Anyway, my friend decides to have her car towed to a tire shop instead of letting it sit on the street overnight, just in case the punks decide to come back and retaliate during the night. So we have it towed courtesy of ICBC to NTW (seriously, she felt it was safer sitting in an empty parking lot on River Road than in the middle of a residential neighbourhood... scary). By this time it's getting late in the evening so I drive her around for a bit, have a few smokes and drop her off for the night.
The next morning (Saturday), I'm on my way to Soundsgood Auto (free plug, Mike!) to get some audio work done and I figure I'll swing by NTW to check out the car. I get a message from her while on the 99 asking about getting an alarm installed from the same shop, so... okay, no problem. I meet up with her at NTW and wait while new tires get installed. We bomb back to her place to kill a bit of time until our scheduled appointment. As we go through the alley and onto her cul-de-sac, we start noticing more and more cars with flat tires. Some driveways had cars that were untouched, while others had all their cars with anywhere between one and all four tires punctured.
What the fuck?
We talked with her next door neighbour and he said that around midnight a bunch of kids had come back and were making a bunch of noise around the neighbourhood. He heard them talking about breaking some glass (a house down the street had a rock thrown through the front door window), and then witnessed one of the kids walk nonchalantly onto his driveway and slash three tires on two of his cars. As soon as he saw what was happening, he jumped outside in literally nothing more than his boxers and started chasing one of the kids. Unfortunately since he was running in bare feet over gravel, he eventually lost them. We hear similar stories from a couple other neighbours before we have to leave to the shop.
After coming back from the shop, we decide to do a short drive around the neighbourhood to check out the damage and to pass out the police case number to the people who were affected. All in all, we found an excess of over 20 cars with anywhere from one to all four tires slashed.
Before anyone can ask, yes the kids who were arrested were brown. My friend lives in the middle of a very brown neighbourhood. However, the mother of one of kids who was threatened while playing hockey made a comment that I did my best not to laugh at: "It's too bad we're in Canada. If this was the old country, I would take them out to the field and beat the shit out of them. But we're not allowed to do that here..." :lol Yes, she was brown as well.
The whole neighbourhood is on alert now and even the police will be making a regular patrol of the area during the night. However, it's just so fucking stupid that some idiot kids think that this would be a cool thing to do. What makes it even worse -- if it's even possible -- is that at least one of 'em were wearing a Canucks jersey while doing this. It makes me ashamed to even be associated by even such a minute detail. At least go wear a fuckin' Oilers jersey if you're going to pull that shit. Anyway, if anyone lives around Martha Jane Norris Elementary (129 St and 66 Ave) in Surrey and has had their tires slashed during the past couple nights, let me know and I'll pass along the police case number to you. You'll still have to make your claim through ICBC, but the more information the police have, the better. Most of the cars affected were stock, but there were about four or five modified vehicles with punctured tires as well. :( The Attention Deficit Disorder Version:
Some drunk ass EI 15/16 year old's decided it would be cool to slash tires on some 20-odd cars. Two kids have been arrested, but likely no charges laid. Hey, look! Something shiny! |
