How do you secure your storage locker?
 

Recently my storage locker got broken into, and luckily nothing got stolen, but i dont keep anything in there of any value...

I was thining of purchasing one of these:

But even if I get one of these I'm not sure if it would do me any good, because on some of them they actually cut the bracket that the lock goes on.

Any suggestions?

Is your sister willing to watch over my storage locker?

My storage locker is wooden, so even with the best lock all that's have to do is smash the wooden door/frame. Thus we just have a normal lock on it and don't keep anything of real value in it.

Yep. It's impossible to secure a storage locker. My locker has been broken into twice.

ask if you can put signage or some sort of sticker, make it clearly visible stating this area is monitored or something to that effect.

I know it's not much, but for something like this, there really isn't much you can do. Your best bet is to not store anything valuable

a dudley lock with those anti-cutter things that go around the shackle bar?

yah mine is wooden too...i'm thinkin of doing the same, i'm now having second thoughts of purchasing a really good lock.

damn.... yah bunch in my building were hit just a few months ago, but this time i happened to be one of them... i think the best way is to have cameras, but i doubt that would happen

i was thinking of putting a sign up, but i'm sure someone would just take it down. Yah it seems like there really isnt much I can do :(

install your own electric fence with on and off switch that you can order from pest control . It's enough voltage to shock a bird, probably enough to shock a human. Then install a real nice lock.
Never done it myself but we do use those electric fence on the roof of commercial building

I don't live in a condo/apartment so I will honestly tell you that I don't know what storage lockers look like nor do I know how they're setup. However, try hitting up Al Scott Lock & Safe to see if you can purchase a lock from his stores. Our company uses the products he sells and we've had several attempted break-ins to our facilities throughout the years, but his products seem to have stood up to the thieves. Our facilities contain tens of thousands of dollars in copper.

reframe the whole thing on the inside. all 4 walls. 2x4 on 6" center with 3/4" plywood screwed to it on the inside, and a solid door with deadbolts that swings in... leaving the crappy door on the outside swinging out with crappy padlock so nobody is the wiser. untill they break open the crap door and don't get any further.

you're lose 4" of usable space on each side.

if the ceiling is open (ie you can climb over the walls, which I've seen) then you'll have to make a ceiling as well.

thats a great idea, but it sounds time consuming...if i make one i'm not sure it will fit through the door though

it happened to me twice, and the only solution i could think of at the time was to move. the apartment i used to live in had storage lockers that entered from the underground parking, and security was a joke. as a result i lost my snow tire set and all my tools. i had my winter clothes in a spare suitcase as well in there but they only ransacked it (looking for something valuable i guess) and left all my clothes scattered around the storage unit. i tried not to keep valuable stuff in there but these were things i couldn't lug up or store upstairs. i had chainlink with those plastic vertical slats as dividers and they just cut through.

That would just make you the target as they'd know you have something worthwhile to steal. 2x4s and playwood isn't going to take a lot of effort to smash.

If you're really paranoid: buy a safe and bolt it to the wall/floor.
If you're less paranoid: buy a metal storage box and bolt it to the wall/floor.

Don't worry about the building caring if you drill into the wall/floor - do you really think they are going to check your storage locker?

It would have to be a pretty big safe, and if it was a really large one, it would probably be worth more than the contents in it.

After hearing what most people have to say, i'm leaning towards not keeping anything of value in my storage locker.

Yeah, you pretty much have to take a risk-management approach. There are several people who leave their storage lockers unlocked and all that is inside are empty boxes, cans of paint, and a few other miscellaneous items that are worthless on Craigslist.

The first time I got burned, nothing was stolen because the theives were looking for personal information (they targeted pretty much every locker they could and overturned boxes and paper in the process.) The second time around, I had some rollerblades and a bag stolen.

My complex has over 300 residents and amongst a group that large, you're bound to have a bad apple or two. I say this because our strata had all the storage locker areas re-keyed so that only the residents who have lockers in a particular storage locker area have access to it.

my storage locker area has been broken into before. my SS bike got stolen. other bikes got stolen too. right now, i use a regular padlock on the actual latch area. i use a big bike u-lock through the frame of the door and through the frame of the cage. i put this lock at the top of the cage so that they can't use their body weight on the bolt cutters to cut through the u-lock. the only way they can get in is to snip through the entire wire cage to make an opening.

also, risk managment is good. never keep anything valuable in storage. just keep it upstairs with you.
