technical help needed: usb y cables

ok so how much power comes out of these cables?

a Y usb cable

does 5 volt + 5 volt = 10 volt?

thanks in advance

Edit: does my post have a long empty space? i see it on my end and its getting annoying >.<

nabs 05-11-2010 08:09 PM

5Vdc + 5Vdc = 10Vdc! ur right!

no long empty space.

homey_v 05-11-2010 08:54 PM

THANKS!!!! =D

if it's combining 2 usb ports... it'll still be 5v just more current available.

homey_v 05-12-2010 01:14 PM

ahh thats what i thought...but my brother was telling me no no itl be 10 volts...thanks for the information you 2

ecsw 05-12-2010 04:59 PM

no, usb y cable combines 2 USB amp (5V 500ma) to make 5V 1000ma (1A).

Over amp is ok. device will only take whatever is necessary. Over voltage by over 10% of spec will fry the device.

Unless you have a y cable that's in serial connection + to -, most usb y is combining + on + and - on -.

iPod is a different story. It has circuit to monitor the voltage from 5V to 14v (possible different lead) to take firewire power as well

im was trying to figure out how to power a 120mm 12 volt fan it works at 5 volts but its to slow so im trying to figure out how to get more volts for the fan.

trying to do this with out plugging it into the wall, but it doesnt look like itll be possible

underscore 05-12-2010 08:32 PM

is this for a desktop PC? plug it into the 12V supply

ecsw 05-12-2010 11:53 PM

take the power from power plug.

4 wires powers for the old style ide has 4 wires. 2 ground, 1 x 12v. 1 x 5v.
i will tell u exact wire tomorrow if i remember.

nop for laptop. wanna make it portable but doubt thats possible, unless i find a 5 volt fan thats 120 mm i could go for a smaller fan though.

Pretty much your only option.

was told that thing sucks.

and pretty loud?

i got this and its not bad...if you place your laptop right on it perfectly or else it rattles like nuts

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13227

ive made myself a slanted base already..just gotta find a fan to make it work good.

you guys recommend any quiet 5 volt fans? the biggest 5 volts i found were 80mm

ecsw 05-13-2010 09:49 AM

^ it's just an example.

There are many laptop cooling pads available on the market. look around I guess.
if you want to wire your 12v fan from usb, it's also possible to use 2 usb to make it 10V. but u need to modify the wire. however, if u r not even sure about the usb combine cable makes 5V 1A, then I wouldn't show you how. :p

get a usb fan would be easier.

Bath Tussue 05-13-2010 11:54 AM

no, it is not possible to use 2 usb to make 10V by modifying just the wire. you will just short your USB ports.

yes you can, but at the end it will not be any usb connector to use, simply 2 wires with 1 positive and 1 negative.

like I say, if op can't even understand 2 x 5V 500ma in combination to 1A, I won't even tell you how to make 10V 500ma from serial 2 x 5v dc power to 10v dc.

Your claim is not possible. Care to respond?

ddr 05-13-2010 01:15 PM

portability aside, get the zalman cooling pad. best laptop cooling pad ever. solid and quiet. google reviews.

It's not possible. To get 10V you need two SEPARATE 5V power sources in series. In a computer, ONE single 5V power source supplies power to all the USB ports.

it's possible. but I made a mistake on the amp.

you will lose the amp by 1/2. Therefore, 2 x 5v 500ma can make 1 x 10v dc with 250ma.

possible or not, only trying to help. it makes no sense to do it either as there are many fan available on the market.

why does ppl here always want to pick on me?

I created posts in other forums to help other ppl with many DIY projects. Some electronical and some mechanical, but mostly got respected. the only place I never get a "thank you" and have people doubted what I say is in here.

Fine, it's not possible. does that make you happy?

ok, that's also right. I forgot about this part....:D

JesseBlue 05-13-2010 07:16 PM

not possible...they all have a common 'ground' you need a fair bit of modifying to get 10V from USB...get it from the firewire port....they should be rated from 8-32 V...but you will need to limit the voltage on the fan side...boom...hehe...
get a desktop fan for 10bucks and call it a day

homey_v 05-13-2010 08:36 PM

lmao ahhh thanks everyone..my brother kept arguing with me that 5+5 does make 10 and i kept saying now

well right now the fan works..but not the way id like it too...

im currently using a 9volt battery...thats being charged constantly by the usb port...which is powering the fan. and yup im afraid of the battery blowing up. lmao

so im tryng to figure out a way..to get rid of the battery...and my dad wont help me cause he says its common sense and that i should already know >.<

and ya look at a lot of laptop coolers but none that are really to my liking. id like to control the fan speed, be portable, and and and DIY =p
but most importantly variable fan speed =D

this is my first laptop and ive never needed to use the usb to power anything >.<.

LMAO for fun...few years ago...i made a case with 15 80mm fans, 3 sets so i can turn them if i dont have my headset on cause it was bloody loud LMAO but that was easy...since there was 12 volt plugs everywhere >.<

firewire port....ive got one.... 8-32...ill check that out. ty ty ty ty ty

and no i will not give in and buy a 10 dollar fan lol even if making this costs me 50 dollar. this has become a "my dad says i cant do it, so i must do it" kind of project lol

JesseBlue 05-14-2010 04:30 PM

how about a dollar store fan that uses 2 AA...just to make it even cheaper...

dmm 05-14-2010 09:44 PM

ahhh ... now we know what you want to achieve, and $$$ is almost no object (at least to prove your Dad wrong!).

Not 100% sure if there is a commercial product you can buy off the shelf but there are devices that will boost the voltage.

There are DC-DC converters that will "boost or step-up" the voltage, and circuts that use boost converter IC's (http://www.eleccircuit.com/lm2577-5v...age-regulator/). This one is an all in one package http://www.murata-ps.com/data/power/...0wa-series.pdf but will probably run you about $100 but you still need to add the wires.
