blown 120 amp fuse lexus sc430

has anyone replaced the main alt fuse in a lexus sc430?

the fuse is actually bolted to the casing but the bolts holding it in are not accesible without removing a shroud. question is how to remove the shroud? anyone that has had experience with this will know exactly what im talking about

Yes. It's not a fun operation. Fortunately, Japanese engineers do make sense. You'll be fine as long as you have a good worklight and patience.

It's the fuse that protects the alternator to/from the battery.

thanks for the tip...

for anyone else that may into this problem, the main panel is right by the battery. start by disconnecting and removing the battery. once you take the cover off the panel you will see 2 plastic clips on either side of the fuse array. these have to be separated so that they will release. i used 2 small flat screw drivers on each side at time. once one side was lifted up, move on to the other being careful not to let the clips close again. if you look carefully at them you will see the tab that has to be widened in order to release the clip.

there is also 2 bolts and 1 nut (all 10mm) that hold the housing down. i found it was easier to work with the housing with those removed. once you have the clips released and the housing unbolted you can raise the fuse array out of the housing. there will be an 8mm bolt holding one side of the fuse in and a 10mm on the other side. very tight space to remove the 10mm bolt unless you remove the battery as mentioned before.

cheers

wasn't me that blew it - buddy's car has been in storage for the winter and he just pulled it out now. as you can imagine he had a dead battery and tried to charge it up. but in his haste, he managed to reverse the connections on the battery - oops!
