ICBC: Province running out of six-character licence plate numbers

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - ICBC says the province is quickly running out of licence plate combinations, but they've come up with a solution. And you don't have to know your A-B-C's (or 1-2-3's) to figure it out. You can expect to see changes to B.C. plates rolled out over the next few years.

With the amount of new plates being issued, Adam Grossman with ICBC expects there won't be any more "three letter, three number" combinations by 2013. After much research, a solution has been found, but plates will still be six characters. "Typically where we see three letters, followed by three numbers--we're actually going to be seeing a sequence of two letters and a number, followed by two numbers and a letter."

Grossman says ICBC looked at moving to seven character combinations like Ontario and Alberta, but found it would be a costly switch, and would interfere with administrative systems for brokers that are built for the six character system.

Seven character combinations would also require smaller numbers and letters, making plates harder for police to read.

No more 888 ___, 168 ___, 338 ___ plates ;)

People who think of the 888 plate as the biggest deal in the world need to be slapped in the head. It's a god damn license plate.. not some sort of life or death situation.

TOPEC 05-25-2010 02:12 PM

so its' going to be XX# ##X?
thats looks so shitty.

Gumby 05-25-2010 02:13 PM

As if the Olympic license plates aren't difficult to read... #cashgrab

Greenstoner 05-25-2010 02:19 PM

does that mean everyone has to change their plate ? And most likely paying fee on top for new plate?

Cash fucking grab

Well, the "types of people" who go for those 888 plates need as much luck as they can get when it comes to driving anyways...

Nonetheless, only idiots waste time caring about what their license plate says. Especially the 'tards who spend hours of their life looking for 888 plates

No, it just means that new plates will start to resemble postal codes.

Greenstoner 05-25-2010 02:25 PM

Cali's plates have to look so weird because of the sheer volume of car there. In BC, its unfortunate that we are going towards that direction because its going to make it harder to report license plates..

ABC 123 is a lot easier to remember than the Cali plate..

fishing666 05-25-2010 06:53 PM

why are we running out of license plates!??!!?

we should just have 4 letters followed by 3 numbers
and the 4 letters must include 1 vowel.

ez to remember..many combinations..insurance companies rich enough to change their data systems..problem solved!

Soundy 05-25-2010 07:20 PM

Even when you start going to all possible combinations of letters and numbers, six characters gives you ONLY 2,176,782,336 possible options.

Which means that we have almost used up 17,576,000 combination already. That's a lot of cars!

I got curious and searched for licensed vehicles in BC; there are only 2,044,431 licensed passenger vehicles in BC. Unless there are rules to what combination of letters and numbers you can use, how can we be running out of combinations with AAA 000 already? http://www.bcstats.gov.bc.ca/data/dd/handout/mvlic.pdf

CP.AR 05-25-2010 07:52 PM

lol combinatorics

hongy 05-25-2010 08:01 PM

Fuck combinatorics, that thing almost made me fail math 12.

That's just for "AAA ###"... remember they've started using "### AAA" the last few years.

And don't forget commercial plates, which use "#### AA" and now "AA ####"

slammer111 05-25-2010 09:10 PM

Ontario's system is great. Slapping an A in front makes it WAY easier to memorize.

This system is only going to increase the total amount of plates (not including those truck ones) by 50% (ie 3:2) from what's currently available, then they'll need to introduce another format in like 10 years again. Very short-sighted thinking by ICBC. Soon our plates are going to look like messed-up postal codes and nobody is going to remember what the hell their plate #s are. I already have trouble memorizing the plate on my motorcycle and that's also 6 characters.

By adding a letter in front, you just increased the number of combinations by 2500% (ie 26:1) over the existing system. ICBC fail.
