22-karat gold billboard going up near Granville Island

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Science World is showing off its 'bling'. A billboard entirely wrapped in 22-karat gold is being set up on West 4th Avenue near Granville Island. It will be unveiled Wednesday, and only be up until Friday.

It's the first of its kind anywhere in the world, and has its own security guard! It's meant to draw visitors to Science World's 'Treasure' exhibit. Two ounces of gold has been pounded so thin it covers the entire 200 square foot billboard advertisement. The cost? $11,000.

Jennifer Newstead with Re-think communications--the group behind the ad--says some people thought they were crazy to make a gold billboard. "The gilder definitely did. But everyone's really excited about it and the billboard looks spectacular."

The billboard is the result of four weeks of painstaking work by Canada's top gilder, Brian Dedora, who usually spends his time gilding vaulted cathedrals or modern works of art.. "The first time they asked me, I thought they were mad. I've never done anything quite like this. I've spent the last three years of my life gilding the Ukrainian National Church in Toronto."

So how do you protect a giant gold board? "We have Paladin Security standing by the billboard. They'll be there around the clock while the ad is in market. Hopefully that will keep people from trying to take a piece of their own."

a security guard to protect a 200sq ft billboard (with only 2ounces of gold flattened over the whole thing; thats $2400)..... u gotta be kidding

Dubai should show them how its done and have a solid gold billboard ;)

The_AK 05-25-2010 06:06 PM

good job Rethink, this will get people talking

Mugen EvOlutioN 05-25-2010 06:09 PM

weak, not solid gold

fishing666 05-25-2010 06:41 PM

it's cheap..llots of stuff out there worth way more than 11000$

Levitron 05-25-2010 07:33 PM

Actually, I'm surprised something like this hasn't showed up in Dubai yet!

jdmhaze 05-25-2010 08:56 PM

11k for 22k? must be thin as fuck

the 24k gold on my neck is worth the same lol

slammer111 05-25-2010 09:49 PM

Not sure why you'd even bother guarding the billboard. You'd make more money work at Starbucks than trying to chip the gold off the thing. Maybe they're trying to fend off the ignant retards who think the thing is solid gold though. :lol

the gold isn't worth $11k; the $11k is the cost of the whole billboard including its manufacturing

like the article says its only 2 Ounces

1oz of 24k = $1200

also why in the hell are you wearing almost 10ounces of gold on your neck? are you Mr.T ??? (or did you just get ripped off)

El Bastardo 05-26-2010 12:08 AM

Paladin Security is guarding, eh? Better hire a druid if you want to steal that gold. With any luck he'll bubble hearth and you'll be left alone with the loot.

AVS_Racing 05-26-2010 01:10 AM

Most people's car worth more than that gold...do we need a security guard as well??

Ronin 05-26-2010 06:23 AM

$11,000 isn't even worth the effort in stealing.

Seriously, think about the effort it would take to steal a billboard.

tacobell 05-26-2010 06:38 AM

Billboard theft is pretty prevalent, some ppl steal it just for the metal. Now add the fact this thing contains two oz of gold as well, certainly some bum with a shopping cart will come along and happily tear into it. Maybe that explains why this thing will only be up for two days.

Drove by it this morning.
it's so dull and dark it looks like cheap bronze.
not impressive at all unless you knew beforehand it's made of gold.

MWR34 05-27-2010 04:24 PM
