if i knew it would step on mars after 520 days i would be able to endure it no problem, but 520 days for an experiment and knowing when the actual time comes for the trip they'll get someone else, fuk that.

you really only get one chance to set off to mars every 16yrs otherwise the distance between earth and mars is just too much. that's why they can't stay at mars for longer than 30days otherwise the earth will orbit too far away.
yeah, the toll is too much on human life to practice simulations of 520days before the actual test. U don't see people simulating jail before they go there.

The Video commentator did say, 520 days simulates the time to get there, spend 30 days there and come back.
So it takes roughly 245 days to get there, and 245 back. with a 30 day lay-over.

It would be a really bad idea to have a man and a woman doing this. Basically you'd end up with this:
Joe Smiths Starlog:
Day 1: Lift off went without a hitch. All systems normal. Jane Doe and I "christened" the cockpit 
Day 30: Watched seasons 1-5 of 24. Had crazy sex with Jane. This is fucking awesome
