Harleys = owned by HA generally
Police = owned by HA generally

Its been a 'problem' for years and years and years but too many Police turn a blind eye to excessively loud motorcycles. I don't see any of these Harley riders changing their exhausts back to stock anytime soon.

We should all have exhausts like this:

This law is not new,it was changed a while ago from a specific db rating/speed to the officers opinion.

Actually no, the section quoted has been there since the late 1980s at least, when I started working in BC. Nothing has changed. The only difference is that the Provincially mandated inspection stations were dropped. You used to have to undergo annual (?) inspections but it was dropped sometime before 1989. Other Province have annual inspections starting after a car was 2 years old or so. They used to have the db testing rooms/areas when the mandatory inspections were in force, or so I have been told by mechanics who used to do them.

Did you read the quoted article, at all? Did you even glance at it?

"On these days only, drivers will be offered an amnesty (no charges) by the police in North Vancouver. If their vehicle is found to be above the legal decibel limit, the Police will explain how to make the necessary improvements."

There's also nothing there about pulling anyone over - they're set up so people can come in and get their exhausts tested. IT'S VOLUNTARY.

Maybe if you think your exhaust has a problem you need to stop in there and have them check.
I actually did read all the comment but was thinking more along the lines of this...

thanks you, thats exactly what I'm afraid of. Showing up and having them let me off for a loud exhaust but give me a couple other tickets while they were checking.

I know its voluntary but if I'm driving by and not attending and its in clear view of everyone that got tested, I can see they pulling me over and "making an example" just to show everyone they are serious

So Soundy go fuck yourself

+1 for the Harleys, The noise they made and blasting on the street all the time.

I'd rather see Hayabusa blasting on the street over that.

this doesn't make sense..

so the sound from a v12 lambo doesn't bother the public, but the sound of a riced out I4 civic that is NOT as loud as a lambo's v12 bothers the public?

how does this make sense?

keep the noise level constant for all cars and all displacements.

Can anyone tell me if this situation would violate the noisy vehicle law?

if your stereo hits 92dB outside I suggest you go to a sound off event.

People should just go already! I did it today at about 1pm, there's nobody there other than a Harley doing test and 1 undercover crownvic and a police van, no other cops in hiding!

From the sounds of it, it seems they haven't gotten anyone there as 1 of the only 2 officers there don't even know how to test a car that's manual, as in what rpm range etc...

The harley came out with 90 and I hit 80. We're both given a section of MVA regarding exhaust etc.

I drove my 1986 MR2 with intake and exhaust. they count as 83 db for cars since it's light duty. bikes are 91db

yeah, they see what's my red line, 7k, thus they tell me to go about 3k, just from idle and slowly rev up to 3k.

Harley went about 2.2k

for cars yes fartcans can be quite annoying depending on displacement.....Sorry honda guys but a 1.6 with a cold air intake does not need a 4 inch exhaust.

on the other hand as a motorcyclist i changed the can on my bike to make it louder because i realized a lot of ppl do not shouldercheck and when i ride my bike i like to be heard so idiots dont need to shouldercheck to know im there. that being said my bike is not unbelievably loud unless i really get onto the throttle like over 8000 rpm. (or when a guy is switching lanes into me and i pull the clutch and hit 16 grand to tell him im there)

If you think the ignorance is bad here, you should see the comments on a local sport bike forum about this topic. So much drama queen fear mongering over "bad cops"

The law is aimed at straight/loud pipe Harleys (~110 dB), and ricer fart cans (~100 dB). They are absolutely profiling and picking on certain demographics, yet for anyone who's ever been woken up by a fart can or loud pipe, you understand why.

For reference, the intensity of sound doubles every 3 dB, yet the loudness only doubles every 10 dB (due to pressure, volume, ... calculations). Thus Harleys (110 vs 91 limit) and fart cans (100 vs 83 limit) are nearly 4 times as loud as the limit.

Some sport bike riders posted their results from the testing this weekend. Of the 30+ bikes that were tested, the majority fell into a range of 90-95 dB for engine speed - which the RCMP officers noted they wouldn't even bother pulling a bike over for. One bike with a cored muffler was > 100 dB, and a couple of the litre bikes with aftermarket exhaust were ~100 dB. When speaking with the RCMP officers that said even these bikes would unlikely be pulled over, unless they were ripping up residential streets.

Here is my bike being tested:
77 dB at idle
88 dB at 5-6K (11K redline, 5-6K is reasonable to shift to keep noise down while in residential neighbourhoods)
Yosh slipon muffler

PASSED! My bike is way louder than most cars, so I think if you have a reasonable aftermarket muffler, you'll be fine.

Wow. So you're saying all the ninja cops hiding in the shrubs didn't ticket you when you left? Maybe they copied down your license plate. They may visit your house and disrespect your family.

No ninja cops, no cruisers behind billboards, no speed traps from private lanes, no photo radar vans, ... a big disappoint for any of the "bad cop" fear mongers.

As I said above, there's no one else other than those 2 cops.

I don't understand what more do people want? They gave us an entire weekend of free testing and gave their words that they won't ticket anybody. I think they should even do this in the RS meet...
