I understand its subsidized like ICBC but that doesnt work with upass. People who choose to drive have to buy insurance, if you dont wanna drive you dont have to pay. But regardless of if you drive, walk, bike, carpool, or bus to school you have to pay for the upass which is kinda bullshit.
I rmb at langara before tehy had the upass, they had a vote on whether or not to have the OPTION of having the upass at the school. I think like 90% voted yes to the OPTION because to help other or for whatever reason. But after it was passed, they made it MANDATORY for everyone to buy one and turned the vote around saying that "90% of Langara Students voted fro teh Upass" before they introduced teh fineprint.

for all those people that complain about not being able to opt out
1 = suck it up
2 = sell it on craigslist
3 = repeat for each semester you attend until graduation
4 = profit
I did that for 3 years at SFU. I would get in my car and drive up and down the mountain passing the horrendously packed sardine cans. Cool in the summer, warm in the winter and never stuck when it snowed.

Wow, it's great for students who need it, but 5 years later and students that don't want it still can't opt out? Well I'm pretty biased as I was probably one of the only few who posted flyers around campus and voted no!

Either UPASS for everybody or UPASS for nobody.
You want to have your cake and eat it too. You can choose not to drive and not buy insurance. And you can choose not to go to school and not buy the UPASS.
I didn't like UPASS at first either. But I might as well milk it if I have to buy it.

So does this mean that ONLY Langara , SFU , UBC , and Cap will have upass?
What about: Kwantlen, Douglas, BCIT?

Sounds awesome! Was mostly using a concession monthly when the school year started last year. Paying $80/month is killer imo. I'd rather pay for gas (which I did). A lot more convenient than taking the bus, although I miss napping from BCIT to my house.
Can't go wrong with $30/month.

I'm taxpaying for some fucking HS kids to skytrain/bus to MORE places since they don't have to pay anymore?
Thanks BC goverment, I'll be bringing this shit up when they start crying "we're in debt! we're in debt!"
Don't get me wrong, everyone should have a safe ride, and ease of commute, but THAT'S WHY WE WORKED OUR ASSES OFF IN HS to buy cars/pay for insurance.
98% of the people who agree with this are in HS, or have already thought of some smartass loophole. At least the gangsta wannabe kids won't want their real name next to a picture and probably won't get one.

This would have been fucking fantastic last year when I was in VCC.
We still had a way to do semi-cheap transit.. We would buy a 'fastrax' sticker and attach it to our student ID, then we only were forced to buy a 1zone pass versus a 3zone since i was coming from Langley. But still, that was 80 fucking dollars a month, would have loved to save $50 over the 9 months i was there... $450 dollars... damn.

- Give post-secondary students a break (not everyone lives at home, has their tuition paid for by parents, etc.)
- Create an interest in public transit so when these students start their real lives, they may actually care about public transit and support initiatives to make it better

My view is that if you can afford to finance, drive, and maintain a car while you're going to university, you are well-off. Owning a car, in my view, is considered a luxury.
