failing nox levels usually indicate that your cat is probably not good. It might also be o2 sensors.

If that is the case, then ouch!

OEM cats are $$$$

Off the record, and somebody please correct me if I am wrong:

If this car was maintained and tuned properly (and I'm not saying that it isn't,) would the cat have been done regardless? Most OEM cats last a long time (not all) and although I do understand that the OPs E36 is supercharged, if properly tuned/maintained (all items related air/fuel/spark,) should the cat have been able to last much longer than this?

It will die eventually.. basically it is done when the honeycomb material gets saturated with varnish / gunk and no longer process the NOx.

There are so many unknowns.. eg what did the car went through, eg e36 often have coolant leaks and that are deadly to cats.. there could have been a lot of fuel dumped if the injectors / fuel system was tuned.

I would suggest the OP to go to a reputable BMW specialist shop like CG or Nixon.

German Auto Sports in Surrey or Gold Wrench Automotives in North Vancouver may be able to help you out. Looks like you need a new cat. OE ones are pretty expensive. You will have to see how the exhaust layout is. If its straight under the chassis without any bends and curves you might be able to get away with an aftermarket cat. Good Luck.

this is true. For an FI car a tune is very crucial. It can make very big differences in what polutants and coming from their car. I'm no expert but im guessing that if the car has an improper tune, then it wouldn't be "just failing nox", it would be failing all tests category substantially.
