| Replacing Power Supply Fan.
Recently, it seems like my PSU's Fan is making a lot of excessive noise. Seems like a worn out bearing or something. I tried cleaning it with compressed air but it still makes excessive sound. Is it safe to replace it?
Anyway, I have an Antec Neo HE 550w PSU. |

Replace the whole PSU. Don't take apart a PSU, it's dangerous.
Probably worth it to mention, don't ever take apart a CRT monitor or a laser jet printer, for the same reason.

Probably worth it to mention, don't ever take apart a CRT monitor or a laser jet printer, for the same reason. | As long as it's unplugged, a computer PSU and a laser printer are perfectly safe to open up. CRTs are dangerous only because the tube acts as a giant capacitor and can hold 20,000+ volts.
Replacing a PSU fan is easy if you pick up a suitable replacement. Good idea to blast the dust out of the PSU while you have it open, too. Only catch is that you'll need to cut and splice the fan leads in most of them, and you really want to make sure you connect the new one properly, and properly insulate the splices.

There ARE capacitors and stuff in there too... I know, because I've gotten shocked before. |

You should try returning the power supply if it is still under warranty.

i find fans get fucked up when you try to clean them
the dust gets between the fan and the uhh thing in the middle holding them
then the dust gets fucked around and turns into mud or whatever, that causes the fan to make noise and anwyays its gg when that happens.

Lube is not good - any kind of oil or grease will just collect dust.

Sometimes, manufacturers will still offer you something even though your warranty is over. I would give Antec a call and explain to them your situation.
I still think it's a bad idea to open up your PSU. New PSUs are around $40. IMO, my life is worth more than $40, so I would just buy a new PSU.

PSU fan connectors could also be proprietary. If you're going to replace the fan be prepared to solder. Doesn't Antec Neo HE 550w carry a 5 year warranty? http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/inde...Q=AQ5&value=en
I. Warranty Length
Antec products specifically receiving the AQ5 warranty, currently all TruePower Trio and Neo HE power supplies sold as new, are warranted for five (5) years from the date of purchase for parts and labor. Replacement products will be warranted for the remainder of the warranty period or thirty days, whichever is longer. Products sold as "B" stock or Refurbished stock have their own limited warranty; please click the link above for details.

I took the fan guard off and lubed it with some gear oil so it seeps into the Bearing. Brushless uses bearings. Seems to work! YAY.
And speaking of warranty, mine's a 3 year warranty. Says so on the box. |
