First off, by agreeing to pay for some of the parts you are basically admitting fault (or at least partial fault). You should have politely refused to pay for anything from the very beginning. If he goes to court, the judge is going to wonder why you are agreeing to pay him something when legally you don't have to. That will make the judge think you have a guilty conscience, and that will also make him think maybe you knew the clutch had problems.
Not only that but you offered to use your Lordco discount. A judge is going to wonder why you have a discount at a supplier like Lordco (perhaps you work for a mechanic shop or you do your own work). This will make it seem like you know more about cars than the average person, and therefore, maybe you did know your clutch was going.
A lot of shops won't accept customer parts, so I wouldn't say they're trying to scam you. The reason is this:
If I buy parts from our supplier and install them on a vehicle, they have a warranty. Not only a warranty on the parts, but on labour as well. So if I did your clutch and later on it's defective, my parts supplier will not only give me a new clutch, but they will also give me money to cover the labour. They will do this because they know we are a competent shop (try getting a supplier to pay for labour if you're some hole-in-the-wall shop or did the clutch DIY).
If we install a clutch that you brought to us, then there's no warranty. Of course if we make a mistake in the installation, then we are liable, but if the clutch is defective we're not going to remove it for you for free just so you can take it back to your supplier and get another one. So you have to pay us the labour to remove the defective clutch and then hope the supplier believes you when you say it's defective.
And you know what the supplier will say? "How do we know they didn't make a mistake installing it"? Then you as the customer get stuck between the shop and the supplier with both likely blaming the other.
Do you think this guy will want to have a clutch installed without warranty?

Yeah, I will tell him that (not word for word obviously) and if worst comes to worst, he can sue me. The last thing that worries me is that on the transfer paper, my address is on there and I have no idea what the new owner will do with that.

well what do you think?
Is it worth risking a criminal record over $1700? Plus he's not even in Vancouver.
like wtf are you afraid of?
Just don't admitt knowing anything and don't agree to do anything cause you don't need to.
you know, it's better if you end this quickly instead of dragging it on.
The more you drag this on, the more the other person would feel like you are responsible for this, which you are not.
here are 2 scenarios:
1)
- keep stalling the issue, and acting like you want to help
- then tell him to fuk off after few months of stalling
2)
- tell him to fuck off right away when he first msged you so you both can get on with your lives
I would go with number 2.

First off what kind of car are we talking about, sorry if I missed it in previous posts.
1700$ for a clutch rebuild is a joke. 350-450 for a new clutch with about 4 hours work to drop it in at maybe 50$ an hour.
Basically you need to man up and tell him straight out "Look man, you bought the car at your own risk, as far as I knew at the time of the sale the clutch was fine. I am not legally obligated to help you with any form of payment, but I have offered my assistance by providing you with a discount on parts, If you choose not to accept my help then I wish you the best"
If he pursues legal action he will get laughed at and you can go back at him for harassment

age doesn't matter in how you drive.
I'v had a 60 year old dude come test drive a manual car and he sucked ass....
OP, don''t pay anything. It's wear and tear and nobody can really estimate how much life is on the clutch unless its already slipping.
It's his fault for not having the car inspected. Quote:

My favorite part is the quote about it being leaking for a long time. As the seller, are you supposed to go and have it inspected before selling it?

Once again, I thank you all that had contributed to the thread and I would like to inform everyone that I have sent my last and final e-mail to the buyer stating I am not responsible and that I will not be legally obligated to pay for anything. What he will do now is all up to him.

I think the case depends on how long after he bought the car before the clutch blew out? 2 days? 3 days? Private sale provides no warranty or guarantee that all mechanic parts should be in working condition after so and so days.
It also depends on if you really said the clutch is in good condition.
I believe, if his father really is an attorney, or even if he's not, he can sue you for misrepresentation of a sale item. Then you'd have to hire your own lawyer to defend you. It's highly unlikely that he'll even win the case.
I doubt he'll go through all the hassle to sue for $1700 worth of repairs, but there are assholes out there like that just so you know.
