| Laptop Noise Levels?
I've been using a Toshiba A100 since 2005 almost constantly everyday, and I think it's time for an upgrade.
I've been out of touch with laptops but I wanted to know is how quiet are new laptops these days, especially ones running i5 or i7 processors?
It's hard to determine this at the computer stores because there is always so much ambient noise. I'd like a computer that can be left on and not be noisy. My current laptop is a bit too noisy to be left on when I'm sleeping.
Also, what are the heat levels like? My laptop runs fairly not in the summer, the palmrest can get pretty warm..

The bigger the better (don't move it around much.. desktop replacement)
Photo editing, RS, occasional gaming. I want it to be fast so it can handle editing HD vid one day.

laptops are quite quiet these days, just make sure there's decent amount of vents and you give it some decent amount of airflow if possible. All laptops will come quiet, but with prolong use, dust in the fans, vents, overheating of processor and harddrive, the noise level will increase.
Get an air compressor , give it a spray on occasion and hope for the best.

Hard drives don't make too much noise. They generate some heat though.

I'll bet there's gonna be a lot of fan noise during gameplay. But since it'll be idling during night it should be ok.

I got a mbp 17". The two silent fans runs at 2000rpm and ssd drive. You have to put your ear right next to the keyboard late at night to hear any noise.

My vaio p and timeline didn't make any noise when they had the regular HDD installed. In fact the Vaio P is fanless. You practically had to put your ear up against them to hear it. Since OP looking for a desktop replacement I think the larger spinning drive vs. the smaller ssd would be a better option $$ wise. Most of the time its the fan that makes the most noise anyways.

before I switched to ssd in my laptop. All I heard was the hd... spinning and clicking. So ssd made the biggest difference for me.
