CALGARY - Theoren Fleury says he considered playing himself in a stage play about his life, but decided to let an actor portray him instead.

Alberta Theatre Workshops is developing a play based on the former hockey player's life story called "Don't Quit Before The Miracle."

Fleury had a long and successful NHL career despite battles with drugs and alcohol.

Fleury, who has been open about his struggles with addiction, made headlines last fall after alleging in his book that he was abused by former coach Graham James.

The Winnipeg police are investigating those allegations.

The script for the play is based on Fleury's autobiography "Playing With Fire," which was released last year.

For the first time in franchise history, the Vancouver Canucks don't own second and third-round entry draft picks and that could change their strategy with the 25th overall selection Friday in Los Angeles.

"There's a possibility that if the player isn't there that we'd like, we'd have a possibility of moving back and gaining two picks," said general manager Mike Gillis. "We have a good group of forwards and prospect defencemen and we have good flexibility to select a player we're comfortable with."

A year ago, the Canucks cited a need for defencemen but couldn't pass on college centre Jordan Schroeder, who slipped from a consensus top-10 pick to 22nd overall. They then addressed the back end by taking Kevin Connauton, Jeremy Price and Peter Andersson in the third, fourth and fifth rounds respectively. The Canucks are lacking a big, mobile prospect blueliner who plays tough down low and thought they had one in Taylor Ellington, the 33rd pick in the 2007 draft. But his lateral movement is questionable as he split last season between Manitoba (AHL) and Victoria (ECHL).

In that respect, the Canucks could be targeting Jarred Tinordi with their first pick. The 6-foot-6, 205 pound blueliner is the son of former NHL defenceman Mark Tinordi. He had nine points and 68 penalty minutes with the U.S. National Team Development Program and was a member of the U.S. team that won the 2010 under-18 world title. Tinordi is projected as a tough, top-four defenceman.

Just spent some time thinking about the draft and such and what its gonna bring for the Oilers rebuilding in the future

Hall - Horcoff - Hemsky
Penner - Gagner - Eberle
Svensson - Cogliano - Brule
Pouliot - Jacques - Stortini

Souray - Gilbert
Whitney - Smid
Peckham - Chorney

Khabibluin
Dubynk / Deslauriers

Fix up the D and they'll may be the most dangerous squad in the West :fuuuuu:

Except in typical EDM fashion, they will all under perform and Khabby gets injured. Another top 10 pick for next year!

Edmoton aint doing nothing because FA's dont want to go there, and once their younger stars realize what a dump edmonton is, they will command outrageous overpayments to stay in Coiler country

Ch28 06-21-2010 04:36 PM

Mason Raymond will hear the Canuck's offer but likely will file for arbitration where Laurence Gilman will rip him to shreds.

i disagree. I believe edmonton has a great chance at being a real power house. They just have to play their cards right over the next few months.

they have a lot of talent on that team that didnt show up last year. This year could be very different

murd0c 06-21-2010 04:48 PM

Just like Chicago it will take a couple years for Edmonton to get going.

Tegra_Devil 06-21-2010 04:51 PM

Taylor Hall is going #1...Tyler Seguin goes #2

Split squad. One in Calgary and one in Vancouver on the same day. Interesting way to do things.

From darren dreger's twitter:
I just asked Bryan Murray if I can kill the "Spezza to Columbus rumour"...he replied, "yes, please do." End of story. For now. 18 minutes ago via UberTwitter

NHLSOURCESSAY says a lot of things...I'm going to wait until Dreger or LeBrun break the story as they always do.

rumors are the best part of the sport. it keeps you guessing and gives us all hope that we'll have a superstar blueline and maybe just maybe we'll win the cup.
