Car-free Day June 20!

http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2010/06/c...vals-2010.html
http://www.carfreevancouver.org/

I never been to this "event" before. Having 5 simultaneous around town is pretty neat. I assume they would be a few blocks closed off while some booths be open - like a mini-night market but in day time and smaller scale.

What got my attention is kit's block party. What is that all about? Are people all over town welcome?

I shall run my car all day that day to counteract the effects of reduced carbon output!

I've been to the Main, Commercial, and Kits ones last year. If you have kids, or a wife/gf that likes to shop, it is a fun event. For the 20-something guys, it is pretty lame, none of the areas have really good patios to sit and have a beer on to watch the "scenery" (if you can get a seat), and you're not going to see many hot women roaming the streets.... maybe some MILFs.

Last year we saw a hip-hip show and a skateboarding trick show, and there were lots of paint/chalk art stations. My GF's 8yo loved it. I liked the Kits one, they had some classic cars on display one weekend. We rode out bikes to the locations cause there is lots of bike parking, and very little car parking.

I liked it cause her daughter had a blast at the shows and art projects, yet hated it when my GF wanted to stop everywhere to look at the overpriced hippy/yuppy art crap/junk.

Wow how childish are some of you? They close off a fraction of a street and the dumbasses start coming out of the woodwork.

I won't be going but I don't mind taking an alternate route if it means a few hundred families can enjoy a nice neighbourhood event ONE day of the year.

And I wouldn't mind if they did it on a small street and not on the big commuting streets. So STFU put on your spandex and roll wit your critical mass jerkoffs.

I don't bike to work. Thanks for your concern though.

Edit: Okay, I just took a look at the map and that is a huge portion of Main St. that is blocked off. I now take back my comment and say this is a poorly thought out event and shouldn't be more than 2 blocks MAXIMUM.

lets all go back to the stone age. From earth day to car free day. Yeahh .. how about a caveman day to hunt animals and avoid shopping at grocery store too ?

I'm really not a big fan of doing this bs at all..

How do you expect a festival to run on 2 blocks? The Kits car show took over 4 blocks alone.

Main, Commercial, and 4th are hardly commuting streets on busy weekends. They are packed, traffic slow, and tons of pedestrians causing lights to change often, bikers holding up traffic, or cars trying vainly to park.

If anything you should already be avoiding these streets on weekends if you're trying to get somewhere fast. If you do frequent these streets you already know of the lack of parking and park on the side streets anyways. The major intersecting streets were not blocked off (ie 1st, 12th, King Ed, Arbutus, MacDonald,...), although there was traffic enforcement to deal with the huge amount of pedestrians crossing.

Ok, how about we say a festival like this in no way needs 17 blocks to be closed off?

You obviously haven't been. Check it out, you'll realize why. There is way more to it than the crappy website leads you to believe.

The North Van location will have classic cars and bikes on display, might be a good father's day trip for anyone interested.

Performances begin at 12noon. I want to hit up kits, main, then commercial. Hope I can visit those 3 places before 6pm for father's day dinner.
