Skinny body with fat stomach

Ok so I have a tall and skinny type of body (~5'9, 140lbs) but am noticing that my stomach is starting to protrude. I wanna keep it flat or at least less round but at the same time I don't want to lose too much weight (because I'm already underweight or close to it).

Any tips on exercises/diet that will help me tone my abs/stomach but not cause me to become even skinnier than I already am?

Right now I'm doing situps/crunches on a stability ball and jogging and hiking a lot with some moderate weight lifting. Trying to cut out late night snacking as well.

and eat the right food.

if you're a skinny, should jogging and hiking even be considered? (i'm not trying to say let your cardio go to shit) but it's going to burn a lot of calories. someone please enlighten me.

StealthFighter 06-16-2010 11:29 AM

i would skip the jogging/hiking. since you want to maintain/gain muscle tissue.
focus on anaerobic exercises. lift with intensity, not volume.

tabatas, sprints are good too.

sorry, you can't spot reduce. can't just do crunches and lose in belly.

list out what you eat on a daily basis. i'm gonna bet you eat like shit.

hal0g0dv2 06-16-2010 12:11 PM

you could do crunches to the moon and nothing would happen, you need to drop body fat , i have never done a crunch in my life, cadrio and lifting and eating right will get you what u want for abzzzzzz

u sound just like me haha
in the past cpl months i gained about 10 lbs and now i weight about 143ish, 5'9''
got a slight belly, not much tho but i was also told to do cardio to get rid of it

+1, cardio won't help skinny-fatness much without a solid lifting routine and a proper diet.

If you do do cardio, do tabatas or some HIIT, don't just go on a treadmill for an hour.

Do you eat alot of fast foods and processed foods? If so that's part of your problem. From my understanding Estrogen is present in plenty of the fast and processed foods we eat and estrogen leads to spare tires and big hips in both men and women.

I always thought skinny guys had natural abs, you know? Just kinda comes with the skinny package.

You got the "Skinny Gut". I've started to notice that on myself as well.Lay off the sugary drinks (soda, Iced Caps), ice cream, chips, etc. Snack on almonds, pistachios instead. I'm no expert but I'm guessing eating more protein and reducing the carb intake might help?? Lifting weights, cardio, and various sit ups/crunches will help you get not only a flat stomach but 6 pack. In only 3 weeks of me trying to get rid of it, I've already noticed changes in my stomach. And because I'm lifting weights now, it's also helped the shoulders, chest, back, and arms department. My next problem is the chicken leg syndrome.

That is the problem with skinny people who think they can "get away" with eating poorly. Sure you will stay "skinny" on the outside throughout your 20's, but the poor eating catches up to you. During all that time, you have been building up visceral fat - fat around your liver and intestines that you can't see until it gets really bad. And this is the worst kind of fat to have. You are also wreaking havoc on your insulin sensitivity. Having nothing but a gut is a sure sign that you're on the road to diabetes.

Cut carbs from your diet completely for a while, eat more fat and more protein, do a bit of weights, and you will be back on the right track.

wow thanks
i never knew about the visceral fat thing and my dads side has a history of diabetes.. good looking out

If you have persistant "fat" around your stomach you can't get away from even if you do eat well and exersise you should also be tested for Celiac disease. I was rail thin but always had what looked like a little "pot belly" pre diagnosis. It turned out that this wasn't so much fat but bloating and swelling in my stomach from the damage in my intestines.

If it's Type II they have (adult onset) it has nothing to do with genetics. They are giving it to themselves by eating an excessive amount of carbohydrates every day.

If it's Type I, that is another matter.

The good thing about visceral fat is that it is usually the first to be 'burned off'. Just drop carbs from your diet, and do resistance training. It's pretty simple! ;)

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I shouldn't bother with too much cardio now.

I have a question about cutting carbs *completely* though. Is that really necessary? Maybe I should have been more clear but my stomach isn't exactly so fat that its folding over my pants or anything. It's just slightly "rounding" and I'm trying to cut it down.

SkinnyPupp 06-17-2010 08:54 AM

Nothing is "necessary" really. Depends on what kind of results you want. The more effort you put into it, the more you'll get out of it

You don't want to cut carbs completely. You never want to eliminate a food group entirely unless you don't have to. I still suggest ruling out medical conditions before altering your diet (unless it's cutting out junk you shouldn't be eatting/drinking in the first place).

Also Type II diabetes DOES have a genetic component. There are genotypes that are more prone towards a heavier body type/slow metabolism/weight issues and there are also non weight related factors.

Also it's not the eatting of carbs (often these come with fats an fiber which make them more diagestiable or trigger insuline production) but the DRINKING of sugar (which has none of the above) that creates the problem. There's a very good lecture online called "Sugar The Bitter Truth" as well as several very good books about the subject.

Lots of good info in this thread. I admit I am guilty of thinking I can get away with eating junk food just because I look underweight. Now I have the similar problem as OP - skinny fat! Been going to the gym 2x a week trying to burn fat and build some muscle. 2 birds with one stone... but slowly.

hal0g0dv2 06-19-2010 11:23 PM

Good that u r possitive and helping yourself

the only way ive heard you can do that is by a "recomposition" its a slow process but its worked for some people.. search it up on bodybuilding.com

Infiniti 06-20-2010 12:47 PM

dont cut out carbs completely..just switch to complex carbs instead of the simple ones.

Okami 06-20-2010 08:44 PM

remember to eat breakfast right when youy wake up to get your metabolism going and dont eat anything full of carbs like 3-4 hours before you go to bed..

before you go to bed you burn the remaining carb reserve in your body then the body has to burn fat for energy source.. PROFIT :D

dhawes 07-06-2010 07:07 PM

hey I have a similar problem....my stomach is kinda big for my size, but its all muscle lol, like i got a 4/6pack, but i have no meat on my ribs so unless i flex it looks a little distended, is there any way to target my sides?
