been when i was younger, pretty fun, but if you're one to shout/scream during the thrill, you'll be eating a lot of sand and your throat will hurt afterwards.

OP, go and rent a sandrail. They're fun and fast. Just don't get it stuck. If you get stuck you have to wait for one of the helper guys to come and help you get out, and that machine probably weight north of 500lbs, and it eats up part of the couple hours you get with the machine. Quote:

I went once a few years ago, it was fun, but it's so easy to not see where the steep dropoffs are... sand is like snow you get a blinding effect where it all looks flat but it totally isn't........... I rolled my ATV and got fined and crap cvuz they have flags on them that snap when they roll (so they know you rolled it and fine you) PLUS you can't be out on the dunes without a flag so you waste a lot of time going back to get one and waiting for them to install it/charge you a fine/examine the ATV wanting to fine you for damage... plus you're picking sand out of your ass for a week after.... also don't rent one of those dune buggies with 2 seats, the people on those barely got to do anything cuz it was always getting stuck.
Just be careful, don't go full throttle off a 25 foot drop like I did!

This is good info. Sounds like overall it's worth doing?
There also seems to be a lot of different places along the sand dunes and different locations to rent from. Anyone have any recommendations in that department?

If you can get a little 250-400cc racing quad you'd have a hell of a lot of fun and you could probably control it better.

here are some notes i put together couple weeks ago. http://www.sanddunesfrontier.com/home.htm
sand rail TOUR 1/2hr $22 per person
QUAD RENTAL 1/2 hr : $35 1 hr : $45 http://www.sandland.com/dunebuggy.htm
1/2 hr. tour includes 10 miles of dunes $28.00 per person
1 hr. tour includes 19 miles of dunes and 1 mile of beach, $50 per person
When i called Frontier, i asked whats the best option for the most intense experience. They suggested the sandrail tour as they go faster than the atvs, and the guides no where to take all the jumps etc. Also no risk of getting stuck or losing damage deposit.

how much is the damage deposit? can you pay it in cash?
if you've never ridden a ATV/dirt bike before dont act like superman and get overconfident, i knew a chick who went there and broke her back, never rode an ATV before
if you can pay the deposit in cash, i'd pay it in cash and if you seriously fuck up the ATV just leave it where it lies in walk away, shit aint worth getting raped in the ass for, i've experianced plenty of rapage with snowmobiles and sea-doo's lol
