B.C. fire dept. suspended for downing rescued beer

Quote:

An entire B.C. volunteer fire department will serve a two-week suspension for drinking at least one of six kegs of beer removed from a burning hotel.

The small town of Oliver, in the Okanagan Valley, originally decided to suspend two volunteer firefighters, and the chief took a leave of absence, after learning some of the firefighters removed a total of six kegs during a fire that destroyed the Mesa Hotel last May.

But Mayor Pat Hampson said further investigation revealed more than just two firefighters were involved.

"The fire department approached us and said, 'Look, we've made a stupid mistake here, and we feel we should all take responsibility for it, even the members who aren't at the incident,' just to show solidarity amongst themselves," he said.

The suspensions will be taken on a rotating basis by more than 30 volunteers, to ensure the town isn't left without fire protection.

The fire department has also written a letter of apology and paid the owner of the Mesa pub for the loss of the beer.

:haha: awesome

Haha, saved them a trip to the liquor store for the after-fire party :p

Great68 07-06-2010 12:28 PM

They suspended VOLUNTEER firefighters?

I hope that another fire doesn't break out in the next 2 weeks...

I'd be like "Fuck it, fight your own god damned fires".

If I owned the pub, the beer would be my gift to them for their work to save my pub.

The Fire Dept should never steal...they should be at all times trusted by the community

ya, if the pub gave the beer to them after, by all means, sure give them a gift....but dont steal that shit

that is very disrepectful of that dept. and i think those vollies should be let go permanently on a cycle basis to bring in new guys who wont be retards!!

Vansterdam 07-06-2010 12:44 PM

i heard they rightfully bought the beer from the owners after the fire lol wonder what happened

quasi 07-06-2010 12:44 PM

I don't think it's a matter of them getting the beer it's a matter of how it was obtained. I'm sure the bar would have probably given them the beer if they asked, there is a big difference.

Presto 07-06-2010 12:49 PM

Didn't the Simpsons already do this?

I'm saying that it was right to steal the beer. I'm saying that the city is shooting themselves in the foot if they are suspending their entire volunteer fire department... People that aren't there for money in the first place... I don't know exactly what they're loosing by being suspended.

But I don't know what an appropriate alternative punishment should be.

they are suspending on a rotational basis...so there wont be problems with fire response..

60% or more of vollies are trained firefighters who havent got on as career guys yet or they are in the works at getting trained....

so these guys really want their vollie positions...it builds their fire resumes...

and vollie positions are VERY hard to get into to...because there is so many applications to fill said positions....i bet if they released every vollie on that dept and put out an ad...they could fill all positions within a week

With a quick glance I read the title as this "B.C. fire dept. suspended for drowning rescued bear." The actual story is much better

Phil@rise 07-06-2010 02:04 PM

If they left the beer behind it would have ruptured so...... HTFC?
I bet the bar owner didn't care and I bet the insurance company didn't either.
So who was the patsy who handed them a suspension?

LG Hunter 07-06-2010 02:28 PM

HAHAHA must..... have...... beer...

StealthFighter 07-06-2010 02:51 PM

i''d give firefighters some beer. they work hard and deserve it. i'll give EMTs and firefighters a keg if they save me.

Ferra 07-06-2010 02:53 PM

props to the rest of the team for coming forward instead of just letting it slide under the table...
maybe it is just me, but i always thought firefighter are more honorable than police

and I doubt the thought of "stealing beer" ever crossed their mind...it was probably more of a stupid impulse thing...
Tired guy after work sees a keg of beer: "damn! i need a drink!"

I didn't realize that, thanks for enlightening me.

fliptuner 07-06-2010 04:12 PM

I heard this on the radio this morning. They also said they (firemen) are tapping 2 of the kegs for some sort of celebration.

I didn't give the incident much thought til I read this:

This is not a case of "having a beer" and being suspended
it's about trust.
What other items have these so-called "heroes" , liberated from fires they have fought?.

The odd plasma tv perhaps or someones gold watch , thought to have been destroyed in the flames?.

Oh sure the insurance will cover the victims losses , so it's not such a big deal, right ,?. Wrong.

You must be retarded to not see the difference between grabbing a drink you don't own vs breaking into someone else car or house.

I'm retarded? Are you an idiot? stealing is stealing, no matter what you do.

or am I allowed free beer, and slurpees for the rest of my life? since it's only "grabbing a drink I don't own".

Gotta love slippery slope arguments.

Yes it was wrong but people have to have the capacity to realize that different wrongdoings have different severities. Liberating beer isn't like liberating electronic appliances to oneself.

Grabbing the beer after the fire ranks low in my wrongdoings. In fact, so low that it doesn't bother me. Had the firefighters took home the bar's Flatscreen TV's, espresso machines, game & entertainment machines, that puts it at a whole 'nother level.
