I take it as "no it wouldn't worth driving up to the states" ?

no it would still be worth driving to the states.
portland's saks had a good selection the last time i was there.
i almost never buy anything here in vancouver.

Timpo 07-08-2010 12:15 AM

what's the price difference though?

like $2,500 Prada bag in Vancouver would be $2,000 in the states? If so, that's like 20% difference..

moky 07-08-2010 09:25 AM

it would depend on several factors too. how long you plan on staying down there, what else you're buying, groceries, misc stuff, hotel, gas and food. just make sure that after you compute your expenses and everything, if you still save some money as opposed to buying all those stuff here in van, then it's still worth it to drive down.

i wouldn't go as far as saying 20% price diff, but if you're already here in vancouver, check out holt, and then check the stuff from the states online thru saks or neiman marcus.

your 20% difference would be paid to the government.

HST = 12%
Duties for leather goods = 8-11%

not to mention you might need to pay sales tax for some states.

if you don't value your time and travelling costs, you will break even if you declare everything.

that's why u go down to seattle or portland. you don't pay tax in portland at all, and in washington, there's the sales tax exemption for bc residents.

but then again, it's better to pay that 20% to the government, than to pay a higher msrp here in vancouver + 12% hst

Timpo 07-09-2010 02:21 PM

sorry for keep asking the same question, but can someone verify if it's true?
prices are non-negotiable even for couple thousand $ bag?

You can't negotiate at Holts, Leones and other major high end stores.

washington's sales tax exemption is on hold right now because the judge decided it would be best for the state to NOT uphold that exemption because they will be out $200 mill a year. they will hopefully pass that judgment of NOT imposing the exemption because they also say it's none of their business what some other province in Canada is doing.

moky 07-10-2010 11:55 AM

@ asg111, yeah i know the sales tax exemption is on hold, ON PAPER. the gf's been there recently and she said she never had to pay for tax on any retail store she went to, auburn, everett and bellevue.

The entire state didn't sue the state of Washington. Only the City of Bellingham and Whatcom County did. That's why if you go further south to Everett, Lynnwood, Burlington, Seattle etc. stores are still honouring the exemption.
