good alternative to Western Digital WDTV HD Media Player

tried my friends Western Digital WDTV HD Media Player .
PRO: It plays pretty much all kinds of file formats.

Con: Its menus system and remote is very slow to respond and use.

Anyone else have a different brand media player that is around the same price range. I am looking for one and only have first hand experience with the Western Digital, dont know which one to compare to.

Was it the WDTV or the newer WDTV Live you tried? The Live is supposed to be faster. Also patriot box office I've heard good things.

Windows Media Center plays everything I throw at it but it does mean a dedicated PC hooked up to your TV.

i've seen some posts about this but not really any procedures on how to actually have it look THAT good...do you have any links? i've seen where it just says put the ac ryan firmware on it..but then what? do you need to put in thumbnails like the wdtv?
