Automotive Tool purchasing question!

Im looking to fill my garage up at home with a decent tool chest and some average quality tools (mastercraft or craftsman type, not snap-on)

I am curious if there are any stores like Sears or Canadian tire that have, say, buy $1000-$2000 in tools, and dont pay for a year with no interest or something like that...like what some places do with furniture or TV's.

I have a sears card, but im not to sure if they have payment options like this.

let me know if your aware of anything like this?

umpadupa 07-14-2010 01:14 PM

snap-on is the best hands down, but $$

i got master craft.. i didnt buy it all at once, i just wait till Canadian tire has a sale( which are usually 30-60% off) and buy then. they also have the life time warranty so i just bring back the thing thing i broke( ie socket, wrench, screwdriver) and they give u a new one.

not sure about craftsman...

snap-on imo is overrated

dont buy tools from cdn tire unless they're on sale.

Greenstoner 07-14-2010 01:46 PM

RONA ? I think i saw an ad few weeks ago buying materials with no interest for few months ?? not too sure about tools ....

some1 told me there is some tools that you just shouldn't be cheap on and torque wrench is one of them. Any truth? what is the difference between a crappy $20 wrench, a mid level sub 100-200 wrench, and say a snap on?

Tegra_Devil 07-14-2010 02:22 PM

ya, things like a torque wrenchédrill bits i wouldnt be cheap on...but sockets and wrenches i could care less as long as they dont slip

Volvo-brickster 07-14-2010 02:43 PM

canadian tire has lifetime warranty, but stores are bitches when u try to warranty something. I once busted a socket they didnt wanna replace it because it meant they had to open a new set from their inventory and it would put the set down 1 piece. It was a sad sorry excuse they were using

snap on torque wrenches are like accurate within 1-3%

Mastercraft maximum are like 3-4% off

I wouldnt go any lower than a maximum

When you start working on more and more cars you will find that there are some places only a snap on will fit in

SumAznGuy 07-14-2010 03:43 PM

You get what you pay for with torque wrenches.
ALL torque wrenches will need to be re-calibrated once a year for proper accuracy if you use them a lot.
I have a $10 made in China torque wrench that was off by 20% for most of the range, new. Had it calibrated to be as accurate as it could be at 80 ft/lbs since I only used it for torque the lugs.

I have some Husky tools, Hone Depot brand, and they are life time warranty but I cracked my 19mm deep socket and so far they have been a pain to deal with in getting a replacement.

Maybe try Toptul? BFB Hand Tools is an RS Sponsor.

get craftsman rachets from sears. they're great quality. Sockets you can get from canadian tire.

toyota86 07-14-2010 05:43 PM

my recomendation...

blue point for impact tools
snap-on for torque wrench and specialty tools
craftsman or JET for regular wrenches, ratchets, sockets
mitutoyo for measuring devices
hakko or goot for soldering stuff
mastercraft, princess auto, daiso tools for junkyard raiding

Tegra_Devil 07-14-2010 06:11 PM

just picked up a 172 piece mechanic set of Craftsmen today, and a Craftsman 400lbft max impact wrench.

next, gotta find a good box...

Listen to this man, however see what you can find used for air tools. I've got an old school craftsman industrial impact gun that's awesome. Most of my tools are JET, which have been great - lifetime warranty, and no questions asked return policy (I've returned wrenches that were obviously heated, then bent, with any problems). I personally don't like craftsman hand-tools, but everybody is different.

Im not hardcore, just for little things around the garage

ask about the toptul stuff, pretty good quality for bang for buck.

Damn, I had the exact opposite happen. I've been in there MANY times with busted Mastercraft tools (Ratchets, Sockets, extensions etc.) and it's always no hassle. I've been told a few times to "Go find the exact same piece, even if you need to take it out of a set just let me know".

I love Mastercraft for this reason and IMO they're great tools for your average guy.
