RHD blind spot solutions for left turns?

not sure if this is the right section to post in.. but i did see "diy projects" under the title well, since being told by so many people that "left turns on a right hand drive car are dangerous".. i've came up with an idea of putting a mirror in the corner of the passenger a-pillar.. this is no guarantee that it'll work.. cause i haven't really tested it as my car's not insured =( but, all it costed me was less than $10 xD here's how i made it, and i hope it helps! let me know how it worked for you or if you have any advice on adjustments & etc.

i picked up a rectangular convex mirror with asuction cup. it's adjustable by a ball-pivot joint. i got this from canadian tire for like $3-4?

turns out i can't adjust the mirror to the perfect point cause the windshield would be in the way =( so i modified it..

first step of the process is to remove the mirror. i just used side-cutters and snipped awayyy!

second, i cut the ball off with a exacto knife, so i could add an extension in..

i then made a hole and put a screw in as an extension

i screwed the ball part of the mirror back on. and the extension is complete =D

put the ball back into the suction, and tada

i didn't want to put the suction on my windshield, so i mounted it to the a-pillar with double sided tape

all mounted up to where i needed it

regular view

mirror's view

and sorry for the bad quality camera, i used my phone for this D=

i think it'd be better with a bigger mirror xD to me mine's a bit too small but try it out and tell me what you think! my idea ISN'T the best, it's just an experiment.. if anyone's got a better idea, please share thanks for viewing, hope it helped

ALSO, if anyone else has any other advices, techniques, or solutions for doing left turns, post them up! i'm sure a lot of people have difficulty with these turns so let's hear some ideas and possibly make this the official thread for blind spots of a RHD vehicle? it'd be great and it would make driving safer

hehe well as i said above, i haven't found out the official outcome since the car won't be out of the garage till i can actually drive it LOL but it was just an experiment and i just wanted to share the idea with everyone and it could be useful for those who drive a rhd vehicle =P but feel free to try it out! let us know if it works if it doesn't, then i guess this'll just be a base for the solution and we can keep adding ideas onto it and etc xD

that's an innovative approach. The best thing for left turns in a RHD car from a fellow owner/driver of one for 3yrs and a LHD driver for over 20yrs is simple:

Patience
don't take chances

I'm sure you've had times where the intersection you're turning left in was less than ideal and there's a big SUV or truck turning left coming the other way. Doesn't matter whether you are RHD or LHD. You can't see oncoming traffic at all. What do you do. wait and be patient. fuck the guy behind that could be honking and impatient. He's not the one taking the risk. You are.

Just my two bits.

yeah i understand what you mean. you're right, it is better to wait and not take chances. but it's just an experiment =P i will continue to look carefully i guess what i'm trying to create here, is an addition just to aid the driver's sight

Looks pretty good! Hopefully stuff like this will help prevent accidents.

We have done a video camera in the left side mirror facing forward and run that to double din screen in the dash. Its very effective and is quite clear too. If you already hae a DVD player there, may as well use it as a visual aid too.

hey that's a good idea =D probably do it for pretty cheap as well. like pick up one of those reverse cameras that bolt onto your lisence plate. and just modify it a bit =P

Excellent DIY project. I'm on my 3rd RHD car and I could have used this when I got my first. Now, I'm pretty used to just waiting until it's safe...doesn't happen too often when I can't see anything. I just wait for the yellow light if I'm not sure. As for passing someone on a 2 lane highway, I live in Vancouver, they don't exist so problem averted.

I would do this for my President but it's for sale so I probably won't.

There's a guy on GTRC who modded his left mirror with an integrated camera and fed the video to his head unit. Great idea but alot of work. This idea is simple and awesome.

i'll definately look into that hopefully sometime soon! i wonder if the windshield would interfere with it? such as sunlight, reflection, etc? maybe mount it on the side of the bumper hidden next to the intercooler or something xD but forsure gonna try something like that. and when i do, i'll be sure to post up a diy tutorial =D

thanks! and wow, that's a lot of work mounting it to the mirror =O but like i said in my post before this, maybe i'll mount a camera hidden beside or on the intercooler pipe =P btw, you have a unbelievably BOSS car. wish i could drive my car earlier enough to come out for some shoots with your president as i don't even have my N yet </3 but good luck with sale! hahaha i've had friends sending me links of your president on cl, they find that your cars awesome as well haha, they don't even have rs either =P

hahah, well you can buy one without the mirror xD it's just to further aid your vision to make sure oncoming traffic is clear =P BUT, always double check and don't take chances

I don't have a RHD vehicle but I stumbled across this, it looks like a very good idea.
Might need a tad larger mirror just in case but I never would have thought of this!
good job

thanks! yeah i am planning on changing a few things. i want it to mount up better, the double-sided tape i have right now isn't strong enough to handle the summer heat i am considering screwing it onto the a-pillar for a firmer mount, but yet debating on whether to do it or not cause i don't wanna ruin it with holes lol. the driver side already has holes from gauge pod though.. so we'll see. i also am gonna go find a slightly bigger mirror too haha. oh btw, did you used to go to fh? not stalking -.- LOL but i've seen your bimmer around a few times and it's actually near the area in which i live in O.o ham's market? i also recognized you while you're driving your bimmer around cause i recognize you from school haha. it'd be sick if we had a little shoot once my car's out the garage(H) anyways, thanks for the feedback xD
