| Chinese student drowns at Alice Lake Provincial Park near Squamish
Poor kid, everyone be careful out there.
METRO VANCOUVER - A 17-year-old international student has died after encountering difficulty in the water at Alice Lake Provincial Park on Saturday afternoon.
The boy, an international student from China, was at the lake on a day trip with a group of youths from a North Vancouver boarding school when the incident happened, according to an RCMP news release.
He was swimming in the water before he was discovered floating and unconscious, shortly before 2:45 p.m. He was pulled from the lake and someone administered first aid before an air ambulance transported him to B.C. Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
Around midnight on Sunday, the boy was pronounced dead. His mother, who was in town on holiday at the time, was at his bed side.
The incident comes one day after the release of a study by the Lifesaving Society which concluded new Canadians face a significantly higher risk of drowning during aquatic activities.

My family used to go camping at Alice lake every summer and I swear everytime we went someone drowned there, I'd say it's due to alot of tour groups and day camps that go to the lake side camp facilities
I dunno why the hell people who don't know how to swim even get in the water.. Posted via RS Mobile |

as compared to what? | As opposed to people who were born and raised in Canada. A large portion of Canadian parents send their kids to swimming lessons.
Many newly-immigrated people come from underdeveloped countries. In China, India, African countries, etc, swimming lessons are a luxury that few can afford so there's no real culture of swimming.
As a former lifeguard & swim instructor that stat is not shocking at all to me, I always noticed that visible minorities are very underrepresented at the pool.
Anyway, that really sucks about the Chinese exchange student. Very tragic.

He may have wandered out into chest-deep water without realizing there was a steep drop-off on the lake bottom. As soon as a non-swimmer realizes they're in over their head (so to speak) they panic, which only makes the situation worse.
He also may have been on a raft/floatie/boat/rock/etc and fallen into deep water by accident.
Or, he could have been jumping off a cliff or rock and hit his head, causing a paralyzing spinal injury or a loss of consciousness.
He could have overestimated his swimming skills, swum far out into the middle of the lake, and found himself too tired to make it back to shore.

Anyway, that really sucks about the Chinese exchange student. Very tragic. | From my own travels around the globe I've definitely noticed that recreational swimming isn't as common or popular in other areas of the world, but I'd add that in many third and even second world countries there is little to no safe water to swim in. Pollution, parasites and predators eliminate large numbers of both freshwater lakes and rivers as well as areas of coastline as being safe destinations to swim in. It's only after immigrating to Canada that they suddenly have a need to develop swim skills, as in their country of origin the opportunity to swim may be limited at best.

white folkes these days | Are you fucking kidding? "White folks these days", seriously? Not only do you not have ANY idea if that actually happened but you also have NO idea whether the people in the lake with him were white, brown, or green. Oh and +1 to the above poster's idea of if you want to come to Canada, you might be served well to understand and speak a few words of English... after all it's only one of the most versatile languages on the planet, and an official language of Canada.
I wish I could fail you 10 times for being so ignorant it hurts.

i once had a friend fall off a canoe and he didnt know how to swim. (i was on another canoe right beside)
he started panicking just waving his arms and legs like crazy trying to stay up.
then i told him to put his feet down. he was standing up.
