Excel is WAY better with widescreen ... First of all, you get more visuals in the ribbon, which makes your workflow easier. Comparing worksheets side-by-side is easier. You have more cells to work with. WTF is the problem ? I use Excel every day and, when I went to a widescreen monitor, it was a frickin' godsend.

Photo editing ... So your photos aren't widescreen ? What's your point ? Guess what, that means you can have tool bars down the side, which means you can your work done quicker instead of going through menus all the damn time.

I don't know about you, but I actually like to get my work done quickly so I can spend my free time playing games. A widescreen monitor benefits both.

I don't know how most people live without 2 26inch moniters.

you actually end up with wasted space in the ribbon with 1920px width
most ribbons will show everything in just 1280px width

problem obviously is you have to scroll up and down a lot more often in widscreen vs standard aspect ratio. (and obviously you can't compare 1920x1080 vs 1280x1024, since one has almost double the pixel)

photo editing: well, a lot of the vertical space are already taken up by the program tabs, options, status bar...etc
and the vertical space is usually what restrict how big you can zoom the photos on the screen and still see everything.

I hate it when ppl talk about widescreen as if you only get more width, but totally ignore the fact that you lose the vertical space

No they don't ... The full ribbon length of the default Home ribbon in Excel 2010 is 1760 pixels wide ...

Also, way to just completely ignore the fact that you can customize the ribbon, which allows you to add way more commands and that you can rotate any decent widescreen monitor to give you far more vertical space if that's what you really want.

How do I lose vertical space, exactly ? Care to point out some 24" 4:3 or 5:4 monitors for me the OP to consider instead of the hundreds of widescreen models ?

if PC monitors are all about watching movies, then it should go beyond 16:9 and start making 21:9 monitors

Really? I work on DBs a lot and love the wide screen format, lets me see really wide tables, or multiple tables joined. Plus the 16:9 allows me to view 2 or 3 documents side-by-side.

I just want 16:9 with more vertical resolution.

The 30" Apple Cinema Display isn't very good. The new 27" screen looks promising for the price though.

The NEC has a HUGE colour gamut, and has built-in hardware calibration. Also, although it is a CFL screen, each of the 16 or so CFL's are individually monitored and adjusted for even brightness. It's about $1200 retail.

As you have an iPad, get that app that places all of your Photoshop palettes on the iPad so that you can have the entire main screen for the image you're working on. It works seamlessly via Bluetooth with Macs, and you can choose your tools by touching the screen!
