Best 24" LCD?
 

My Benq FP241W has developed a weird sort of...dark...spot on it. Not dead pixels but just a strange dark stain on it. No, it's nothing actually on it that can be cleaned...I've got no idea what it is.

So I'm going to look into buying something new and...well, I haven't had to buy a monitor for years after this one cost me damn near $1000 years ago.

I use a Benq G2400 as my second monitor (also 24") and I can clearly see that the colors and brightness aren't as good on it so I'm rather picky.

So what is the best 24" LCD? I'm mostly concerned about picture quality as I edit pictures on it and the only game I really play is World of Warcraft.

We've sold a few of the new NEC 27" version of the above monitor recently, and the clients rave about it.

samsungs are pretty good...

i have a 24" widescreen... i use it for both my computer and xbox.. HDMI FTW!

I recognize that Eizos are probably the best but they've always been far too expensive. I mean, a couple hundred more and I'd have the 30" Apple Cinema Display.

That NEC looks promising. Why that one?

I have an asus 26.6 inch that I purchased from ncix, for 239. Couldn't be more satisfied. The HDMI lag is only 2ms too :)

If you're picky about colours and viewing angles, better get a monitor with an IPS panel. They are vastly superior to the cheaper monitors. My old Dell IPS monitor is still better than most of the screens that are sold today.

Here's a 24" one from Dell with an IPS panel. It's reasonable priced.

I have a Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP and I'm happy with it. The new one uses an IPS panel (vs. the VA panel mine has), which should make it even better. The only downside to it is that it's slow to switch inputs and doesn't have a remote (I was spoiled by Sony before they stopped making monitors; my old Sony offered better picture quality, faster input switching, and a remote, which made hardware calibration much less annoying). Currently on sale for $479 at Dell.

And, of course, you have your NECs, Eizos, LaCies, etc. for your higher-end professional displays, but expect to pay more.

i remember seeing Dell has a 23" IPS LCD on sale not long ago for around $250.

Not sure how picky u are, but I think most ppl will find IPS panels picture quality at least adequate.
and you can get 4 of them for the price of 1 NEC... ;) (or probably 8 for the price of 1 Eizos!)

Samsung makes some serious good LCD. Picture quality is crisp and outstanding for gaming where you need 120hz refresh rates.

i've been using a samsung syncmaster 2343swx. got it for cheap at ncix boxing day sale.

planning to go IPS soon, and using this as a 2nd monitor. but so far so good :)

IPS is the way to go. But if you can live with a TN panel like I do, Samsung makes good monitors for a reasonable price. Currently have a SyncMaster 2343BWX :)

No need to spend a fortune on screens unless your clientele base is corporate/commercial. A Dell ultrasharp or Apple Cinema displays can get pretty accurate colours/gamma.

I have a 23" Samsung PX2370 and I am really happy with it. The only thing I don't like is the stand. It looks GREAT, but is wobbly and squeaky.

It's not an IPS though, which you would want if you do more 'true colour' stuff like photo editing as opposed to needing a really fast refresh rate for gaming (this one is 2ms)

Remember it's a wide gamut monitor, so you are going to need to make sure Windows is using the right colour profile. The standard wide gamut one works fine for me, and I disable colour profiles in Photoshop and save as sRGB.

^just make sure you dont confuse ms rate with hdmi lag. I found that out when I played ssf4 on my old moniter through my ps3.

I wish they made some decent LED 24"+ panels (with minimal 1200 vertical).

I'd never go back to a 'taller' display. being able to have a web browser + twitter + MSN + sidebar gadgets all on the same screen is awesome. Then you have games and movies.

Do you do any development? I used to have my 19s in landscape so I could see more code at once. My new 24s are too big too mount vertically (found myself scanning up/down too often) yet I would really like more vertical screen resolution.

I have a new dell laptop with a 16x9 screen, tried the default 1366x768 resolution before ordering and hated it, everything seemed so small, so I ordered the 1920x1080 screen.

Nope, just writing, reading, video games, movies, etc. For coding I could see why you'd want a taller display. For just about everything else, maybe not. Guess it's just down to odd personal preferences

Coding or other sort of text based work I can see the usefulness of a "taller" screen but for everything else, widescreen is just better.

Unless you get a 30 and two 20s to mount in vertically to match.

excels & documents work suck on 16:9

Even for photo editing work...i don't see much advantage of using widescreen since most photos are taken in 1.3-1.5 aspect ration...(while 16:9 has a 1.77 aspection ratio)

The only time I like wide screen is for movies and gaming...

but nowaday you actually have to pay a premium to get non widescreen format display.
