playing movies on DVD player

hi,

i'm trying to burn ip man 2 DVDrip (700mb .avi file) onto a DVD 4.7gb and playing it on my standard DVD player downstairs connected to my TV. I don't have the fancy blue-ray PS3s or USB dvd players so is there some sort of converter that I need in order to make this work? or is this simply not possible?

i'm a complete amateur at this stuff. any tips would be greatly appreciated

cheers
