a friend of mine has a HP P4 machine + old socket 775 mobo, he's asking me if he can buy a newer D2C CPU and stick it in?

Run CPU-Z to see the motherboard/chipset so we'll know what works.

I'm assuming by D2C, you meant C2D (core2duo)
Anyways, no. The P4 775 socket is not the same as the LGA775

I thought the socket 775 = LGA775 = socket T?

The newer P4 Prescotts (2.66-3.4GHz D0 & E0) use LGA775.

Get a screencap of the part that shows the chipset, or at least find out what the current CPU is.

Find out the chipset. I have a ton of high end but outdated P4 chips that may be of use

mobos can be had for cheap price.. or look for a used one if you want to save some more money..

the good with getting an actual C2D board is that you can upgrade from a C2D to a C2Q or even to C2E if you want later on..

It's highly unlikely the upgrade you want is possible. The Prescott is a single core CPU. It is likely a Pentium D CPU will work, but not a 2nd generation Dual Core (C2D). If you can't find any info from Google, you should forget about attempting the upgrade, unless you already have the CPU. Its too risky to go thru the effort and expense of finding a CPU to find out it doesn't work.

No, you can't run a Core 2 Duo ... A Pentium D 900 series might be worth a look if you can pick one up for cheap (<$75).
