Novus (internet/tv service)

anybody know anything about them expanding services to outside of the downtown core? i've read some articles dated march 2010 that it would be happening, but there doesn't seem to be any details floating around.

Novus has been expanding to buildings outside of the downtown core. My building is 3 years old, in the Burnaby-Brentwood area, and Novus introduced services over a year ago (been with them ever since.)

If your building is relatively new and has fibre-optic wiring, chances are that Novus will be in there soon (if they're not already.) It would probably to a good idea to check with your strata council to see if they've been approached.

You should absolutely switch to Novus unless you download over 100 gigs per month. Speed is pretty close to what they advertise and it's constant. They never have unexpected outages - if they need to perform network maintenance, they will send you an e-mail well in advance (typically, it happens in the middle of weeknight.) They do enforce bandwidth caps however and you will either have to pay $0.50/GB or downgrade your speed for the remainder of the month if you exceed the limit (110 GB I believe.)

The installation is painless - the installer will go into your closet and activate one of your outlets. It's actually kind of nice not to have an external modem.

FYI... I have the option of going novus net 20 (20 downstream/10upstream) for $19.99 as promo from my building...

don't get ripped off at more than that... my building didn't have the promo till I called in, and they setup some stupid demo for 2 days that i didn't even go to :P

the whole point of fibre is not the downspeed anymore, it's the upstream that matters. something that cable/adsl will never match.

i got the net 40 for novus..
It was ridiculously slow for the first while until I called customer service and complained...
The download/upload test was coming out normal but the actual download speed when I download something was 50kb/s when it came out 500kb/s from shaw for the same place. I guess they fixed it now since I'm getting 2000kb/s now lol

Yeah, I'm on Net20. When I first switched, the only promos available back then were Net10 (what it was then) for 19.99 for the first 4 months and basic cable for 9.95 for the first 4 month. Shaw then blitzed our building with that TV/Net/Phone + PVR deal for $30/month for the entire year. It was a great offer, but I was able to resist.

Now I pay about $68/month for Net 20 and basic cable + a couple of HD add-ons. Not great, but slightly cheaper than Shaw.

I wouldn't say it's a lie. I got around 19 MPBS when I last did Speedtest. Give them a call and see what they can do for you.
